The Oscars 2006
Just a bit of fun - my tips for the Oscars and who I'd have voted for if I could.
I promise I won't change my predictions after the winners are announced! Last year's
attempt went surprisingly well so it can only go downhill from there!
Best Picture
Nominees: Brokeback Mountain,
Capote,
Crash,
Good Night, and Good Luck,
Munich.
My prediction: Brokeback Mountain
My opinion: No contest - Crash.
Was I right? No, but glad to be wrong - the right one took the prize (Crash).
Best Leading Actor
Nominees: Philip Seymour Hoffman (for Capote),
Terrence Howard (for Hustle & Flow),
Heath Ledger (for Brokeback Mountain),
Joaquin Phoenix (for Walk the Line),
David Strathairn (for Good Night, and Good Luck).
My prediction: Philip Seymour Hoffman
My opinion: David Strathairn
Was I right? Yes.
Best Leading Actress
Nominees: Judi Dench (for Mrs Henderson Presents),
Felicity Huffman (for Transamerica),
Keira Knightley (for Pride and Prejudice),
Charlize Theron (for North Country),
Reese Witherspoon (for Walk the Line).
My prediction: Reese Witherspoon
My opinion: Again, no contest - Felicity Huffman for Transamerica. Head and shoulders above the rest.
Was I right? Yes, it's a travesty.
Best Supporting Actor
Nominees: George Clooney (for Syriana),
Matt Dillon (for Crash),
Paul Giamatti (for Cinderella Man),
Jake Gyllenhaal (for Brokeback Mountain),
William Hurt (for A History of Violence).
My prediction: Paul Giamatti.
My opinion: Sacha Baron Cohen for Madagascar, but unsurprisingly he's
not nominated. Of the nominees, Clooney, Dillon and Giamatti were all excellent - I'll go for George.
Was I right? Nope, Clooney got that one.
Best Supporting Actress
Nominees: Amy Adams (for Junebug),
Catherine Keener (for Capote),
Frances McDormand (for North Country),
Rachel Weisz (for The Constant Gardener),
Michelle Williams (for Brokeback Mountain).
My prediction: Rachel Weisz
My opinion: Maggie Smith for Keeping Mum. Of those nominated, Rachel Weisz
I guess - but I haven't seen Junebug and North Country yet.
Was I right? Yep.
Best Director
Nominees: Ang Lee (for Brokeback Mountain),
Bennett Miller (for Capote),
Paul Haggis (for Crash),
George Clooney (for Good Night, and Good Luck),
Steven Spielberg (for Munich).
My prediction: Ang Lee.
My opinion: Robert Rodriguez for Sin City - of those nominated: Paul Haggis.
Was I right? Oh yes. No surprise.
Best Animated Feature
Nominees: Corpse Bride,
Howl's Moving Castle,
Wallace and Gromit in the Curse of the Were-Rabbit.
My prediction: Wallace and Gromit.
My opinion: Madagascar - it's criminal that it's not nominated.
Of these three, Wallace and Gromit is the best.
Was I right? Yes - bit of a foregone conclusion that one.
Best Original Screenplay
Nominees: Crash,
Good Night, and Good Luck,
Match Point,
Syriana,
The Squid and the Whale.
My prediction: Crash.
My opinion: Crash - though Match Point was good too.
Was I right? Yes!
Best Adapted Screenplay
Nominees: Brokeback Mountain,
Capote,
The Constant Gardener,
A History of Violence,
Munich.
My prediction: Brokeback Mountain
My opinion: Sin City. Of those nominated - actually, none of them were brilliant, sod 'em.
Was I right? Yes again!
Best Cinematography
Nominees: Batman Begins,
Brokeback Mountain,
Good Night, and Good Luck,
The New World,
Memoirs of a Geisha.
My prediction: Memoirs of a Geisha, provided the
Brokeback Mountain train doesn't flatten it.
My opinion: I guess I'll give Brokeback Mountain one nod here.
Was I right? Yes - this was a 5-1 underdog according to the bookie.
Best Special Effects
Nominees: The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe,
King Kong,
War of the Worlds.
My prediction: King Kong.
My opinion: King Kong. Gotta love that ape.
Was I right? Yes, King Kong got the banana as expected.
The Bernard Matthews Award
Turkey of the Year would be Diary of a Mad Black Woman if it
had been released over here - but as we were relieved of that pain, it goes to Vin Diesel's slide from cool to cock in
The Pacifier. Truly terrible.
Pleasant Surprise of the Year
A joint award this one - two movies that I was expecting nothing from that turned out to be brilliant:
Unleashed and The Devil's Rejects.
Brown Pants Award
Scariest movie - gotta be The Exorcism of Emily Rose. Hoo-eee.
Overall results
Same as last year - two wrong from eleven predictions. Just call me the Mystic Monkey.
All done
That's it for another year. What will next year's hits be? Will The Pink Panther be anything other than
awful? (Unlikely) Will Superman Returns be the best superhero movie? (Far more likely) See you back here next year.
