The Devil's Rejects

The Devil's Rejects

Cast: Bill Moseley, Sheri Moon, Sid Haig, William Forsythe.

Directed by Rob Zombie.

Story: Nasty people doing nasty things to each other.

Running Time: 1hr 49 minutes.

Certificate 18.

Finally - a horrific horror movie! I thought Hollywood had forgotten how to make them. The Devil's Rejects is a highly disturbing and immoral story of murder, mayhem and revenge - and it's surprisingly good.

Sheri Moon Zombie and Sid Haig, out for a good old-fashioned family maiming. The Devil's Rejects is the sequel to the 2003 horror House of 1000 Corpses and continues in a similar vein. The "Devil's Rejects" are a band of murderous scumbags travelling the country inflicting pain on anyone who crosses their path. On the trail of them is Sheriff Wydell (William Forsythe), determined to stop their evil ways. But the Rejects enjoy their evil ways, and abduct a group of friends, holding them hostage in a motel room. Without giving away too much, it's fair to say they're not very nice to their new friends. Normally this kind of movie does nothing for me, but this one is different - it's shot with style and written with panache, boosted by a great acoustic soundtrack to help set the scene. Yes, it's true, The Devil's Rejects is a horror film that bucks the cliches and is actually - dare I say it - fresh, with the hand-held camera adding authenticity and the style drawing from unusual influences such as the little-seen Spun. Holy crap, it's so long since I've seen a quality horror film that I almost can't believe it myself.

Leslie Easterbrook, going through her Jackie Stallone phase. Nearly all of the actors in this movie were new to me, but every single one gives a cracking performance, from the manic brother-sister pairing of Brian Moseley and Sheri Moon Zombie to the hideous clown Sid Haig ("Captain Spaulding"), with a particularly chilling turn from Leslie Easterbrook, somewhat different from the Police Academy trainer we know her from. Every scene is entirely believable, which makes the nastiness all the nastier and the suspense all the suspendier. The script is fabulous and so incredibly well realised on screen, with a rare unpredictability that makes every scene a surprise. Come the end, I had no idea where the story was going - how many movies can you say that about? It is, in fact, hard to fault The Devil's Rejects in any significant respect - it's even funny in several places. The only reason it won't appeal to everyone is the graphic nature of the violence - it's definitely not one to show the kids.

The Devil's Rejects is a thoroughly refreshing change from the normal horror crap. Far better than Land of the Dead, which is the year's only other decent horror, it excels and should be considered a benchmark for the genre - it deserves to become a cult and would have made far more money if only the marketing men had an ounce of competence between them.

I enjoyed this film: 5/5

I think the average moviegoer will enjoy it: 4/5 as long as you're not easily offended or upset!

Testosterone Satisfaction Rating: 5/5 F-words, C-words, full and partial nudity by Kate Norby, Priscilla Barnes, Sheri Moon and Ginger Lynn Allen, tons of graphic icky violence.

To enjoy this film you should: be into real horror.

The Devil's Rejects is on general released in the UK now.

Totally agree with the review, Amigo. Saw this a few weeks ago and was pleasantly surprised. Found it to be more of a homicidal maniac "road movie" than a horror movie. It reminded me of some of those gritty biker movies from the 70's. A solid 3/5.
