Land of the Dead

Land of the Dead

Cast: Simon Baker, John Leguizamo, Asia Argento, Dennis Hopper, Robert Joy, Eugene Clark.

Directed by George A Romero.

Story: Fourth in the Dead series, zombies vs humans again.

Running Time: 1hr 33 minutes.

UK Certificate 15.

Land of the Dead is a zombie-splatting, entrail-yanking, intestine muncher of a movie. There is a story, but we don't care, it's all about the gore. George A Romero dishes up enough dissection to satisfy all zombie fans and repulse the rest.

Simon Baker and Dennis Hopper discuss their favourite zombie profiterole recipes. Romero's zombie movies have become something of a legend, but it's been 20 years since the last outing - Day of the Dead. Since then, the horror genre hasn't had many great successes and has remained largely static, with the only major advances being in the area of special effects. These advances are used to great effect in Land of the Dead, with the gruesome dismembering scenes looking more authentic, and thus more stomach churning, than ever. The plot revolves around Simon Baker, who I only remember from LA Confidential, but was also in The Ring 2 and Red Planet. Baker, along with the other remaining humans, live in a mini-town, protected from the zombies outside. John Leguizamo, from Spun and Assault on Precinct 13, is a rogue supply hunter who takes matters into his own hands when spurned by Evil Boss Man Dennis Hopper and, amusingly, Shaun of the Dead's Simon Pegg appears in a quick unrecognisable zombie cameo. Does any of this make any difference? Not one jot. These may be experienced zombie hunters, but they still can't stop a lumbering bag of bones from creeping up on them once every two minutes, providing a welcome bout of spattering so we don't need to concern ourselves with the plot.

Harrods' sale always attracts the undesirable crowd. Romero has created an intriguing world in which zombies and humans co-exist. Some zombies are captured and exhibited as fairground attractions, some are hunted for sport outside the town. All the while the zombies grow gradually smarter and, led by "Big Daddy" zombie (Eugene ClarK), they view the humans' world with envious eyes, and slowly and surely, drew their plans against us. Or something like that. As the movie progresses, the lines between human and zombie become increasingly blurred, within the underlying social commentary we've come to expect from Romero's movies. The stars, however, are just a tad too pretty and Hollywoody to fit into Romero's world, and the whole experience is a little too monochrome visually - most of the scenes look exactly the same and this drabness does infect the memory of the movie, leaving it difficult to remember much of the detail.

Land of the Dead is a worthy fourth instalment in the zombie saga. Perhaps not the masterpiece it claims to be, but definitely worth a watch if you like this kind of thing. Better than much of today's lame dross that claims to be horror, e.g. The Cave, but not edgy enough to top The Devil's Rejects as horror of the year.

I enjoyed this film: 3/5

I think the average moviegoer will enjoy it: 4/5, but only if you like gory horror.

Testosterone Satisfaction Rating: 4/5 Very gory, some effing, brief anonymous boobs.

To enjoy this film you should be: into simple gore-fests.

Land of the Dead is released in the UK on 23rd September.
