The Oscars 2005

Just a bit of fun - my tips for the Oscars and who I'd have voted for if I could. I promise I won't change my predictions after the winners are announced!

Best Picture

My prediction: The Aviator

My opinion: Collateral or Shrek 2, though neither are nominated. Out of those nominated, Finding Neverland.

Was I right? Nope, Million Dollar Baby took it. Shows what I know.

Best Leading Actor

My prediction: Jamie Foxx (for Ray)

My opinion: I have to say no-one stands out as exceptional this year. I'll go for Jamie Foxx, or possibly Johnny Depp (for Finding Neverland). Brad Pitt in Troy deserves a mention too.

Was I right? Spot on.

Best Leading Actress

My prediction: Hilary Swank (for Million Dollar Baby)

My opinion: Hilary Swank.

Was I right? Yep, got that one too.

Best Supporting Actor

My prediction: Morgan Freeman (for Million Dollar Baby), though I have a sneaking suspicion that Clive Owen has the political edge for Closer. He's my second choice!

My opinion: Alan Alda, EASILY (for The Aviator), though little Freddie Highmore takes my second spot for his Peter in Finding Neverland.

Was I right? Yes, three from four so far, going well!

Best Supporting Actress

My prediction: Cate Blanchett (for The Aviator)

My opinion: Virginia Madsen (for Sideways)

Was I right? Yes, got that one as well.

Best Director

My prediction: Martin Scorsese (for The Aviator), second choice Clint Eastwood (for Million Dollar Baby).

My opinion: Michael Mann (for Collateral), though it's not nominated. Of those nominated, Clint Eastwood.

Was I right? Not this time, I was sure Scorsese would get that one.

Best Animated Feature

My prediction: The Incredibles

My opinion: Shrek 2

Was I right? Yes, not a surprise but a disappointment in my view.

Best Original Screenplay

My prediction: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

My opinion: I'll go with that. Garden State was pretty damn good too.

Was I right? Yes.

Best Adapted Screenplay

My prediction: Sideways

My opinion: The Bourne Supremacy. Of those nominated, well I suppose Sideways as well. The screenplay was good even if I didn't rave over the whole package.

Was I right? Yep, doing OK so far.

Best Cinematography

My prediction: The Aviator

My opinion: Collateral, though criminally it's not nominated here either. Out of those nominated, I guess House of Flying Daggers.

Was I right? Yes.

Best Special Effects

My prediction: Spider-man 2

My opinion: I, Robot

Was I right? Yes! I was so hoping I was wrong on that one - I, Robot deserved it so much more.

The Bernard Matthews Award

For sheer offensiveness to cinema, the Turkey of the Year is undoubtedly, unreservedly The Passion of the Christ. Even writing about it again makes me shudder.

Overall results

Permit me a little smugness, I got 9 from 11 predictions right on the night. Pity I didn't put my money where my mouth was!
