Shrek 2
Cast: Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz, Eddie Murphy, John Cleese, Jennifer Saunders,
Antonio Banderas.
Directed by Andrew Adamson, Kelly Asbury and Conrad Vernon, though I'm
not quite sure what the director does in this kind of film!
Story: Shrek meets the in-laws in a computer-generated sequel.
Running Time: 92 minutes.

You know, I think these computer things could catch on. No longer does a director
have to spend all day on set waiting for his actors to nail it - he can sit at a computer tweaking
and poking until it fits. This is the strength of the computer animation genre - details. The
director can have finished the scene, sitting with his feet up and a cup of cocoa, when he thinks,
"hang on, that would be better with a seagull in the background," so over he pops to his techie
guys and says, "gull me." He then spends the next few hours perfecting the gull and lo! The
scene is improved. Over the course of an entire film, this generates an aura of completeness
that is simply not possible with live action. That is, if it's done right. Shrek did it right
and so, I'm pleased to report, does the sequel.
Welcome back Shrek, welcome back Fiona, welcome back Donkey. I missed you and
now you're back it feels like home again. I could - and have - watched these movies many, many
times and their lure never fades. Whether it's Donkey making popping sounds to make the cart
journey go faster, or the Fairy Godmother's I Need a Hero or Shrek's masterful lines
("You great stupid pastry!"), there is always something to make me smile, laugh and feel like
the world is a better place. Make no mistake, this is a masterpiece of cinema and it's
inconceivable that there won't be a third film to continue the story. The thought that this
genre is still in its infancy must give today's young starlets major cause for concern, as surely
this spells the end of the gravy train for the Hollywood actor. Undoubtedly live action
productions will continue apace, but there is now a new industry within the industry, and it is
removing the spotlight from the actors. It won't be long before the computer-generated movie will
be able to produce dramas and thrillers to the requisite quality, and when they do they will
introduce a degree of craftsmanship never before seen in these genres. I say bring it on.
The voicing is perfect, particularly Eddie Murphy's hyperactive Donkey, who is
the jewel in the story's crown. Mike Myers and Cameron Diaz reprise their Shrek and Princess Fiona,
joined this time by John Cleese and Julie Andrews as Fiona's parents, Antonio Banderas as the cute
but ferocious Puss in Boots, Jennifer Saunders as a venomous Fairy Godmother and Rupert Everett as
the slimy Prince Charming. Curiously, in the American version Larry King voices the ugly sister
and Joan Rivers is the compere towards the end. In the British version, however, these same parts are
voiced by Jonathan Ross and Kate Thornton respectively. Now there's something you can't do with
a live action film!
In case it's not obvious yet, I think Shrek 2 is one of the best films ever made.
Furthermore, I can't think of anyone I know who wouldn't enjoy it too. Its appeal spreads across the
whole board - young and old, cool and nerdy, man and woman. Go and see Shrek 2 or live with an
ogre-sized hole in your life for evermore.
