Diary of a Mad Black Woman
Directed by Darren Grant. Story: A devoted wife gets dumped and has to deal with single life. Running Time: 1hr 56 minutes. Certificate: not issued at time of writing, it might not even be released in the UK at all (fingers crossed).
Diary of a Mad Black Woman is a movie for a daytime TV audience. Yes, I know, scary isn't it, but there you have it. You won't be surprised to learn that it's disastrously bad and marginally less enjoyable than playing noughts and crosses on your own hand with broken glass.
Diary of a Mad Black Woman is a hateful, sanctimonious piece of crap. There is only one sector of society that will enjoy this, and that sector can be defined by one criterion: if you've ever whooped and yelled, "you go girl!" at the television, you're in it. I enjoyed this film: I think the average moviegoer will enjoy it: Testosterone Satisfaction Rating: Makes me cringe just thinking about it. To enjoy this film you should: talk to Jerry Springer's guests on the TV.

Cast: Kimberly Elise, Tyler Perry, Steve Harris, Shemar Moore.
It all starts so well. Kimberly Elise gets heartlessly booted out of an 18-year marriage and shows all signs of turning
feral and going on some kind of killing spree. But then Kimberly visits a house in the suburbs and, bizarrely, a big
black man in a dress with massive fake boobs comes barging out of the house and starts rabbiting on about nothing.
Even more bizarrely, it slowly dawns that we're supposed to believe that this pantomime Lily Savage is actually a woman,
who proceeds to deliver quite possibly the worst performance in the history of modern cinema. Not only that, this
bullish goon, Tyler Perry, also plays the bat's elderly brother, whose best moments all involve farting, and the
family lawyer as well, which is a normal non-ruinous character, showing he's not completely devoid of ability after all.
Apparently he also wrote this drivel and the corresponding play, which presumably explains why no-one kicked him out.
He's trying so hard to be Eddie Murphy, but he's not even in the same league.
How this was ever made into a movie beats me - the characters are all one-dimensional, the plot is awful, the script even
worse. It's simplistic, childish and offensive to just about everyone in its sweeping generalisations and polar
characterisations. It can't decide what it's trying to be - half of it is trying to be a drama and the other half is
trying to be a comedy, but the two halves don't meet in the middle and both are entirely unsuccessful, as the movie is
sickly instead of dramatic and painful instead of funny. Kimberly Elise is actually excellent in the lead role, but
she can't rescue Diary from
being a catastrophic failure in every respect. Well, nearly every respect. The film actually did rather well in America,
even hitting the number one spot - which is more than a little distressing when you consider what that reveals about the
state of the populace. Oprah Winfrey has a lot to answer for.
