Go to the flicks, see naked women - I'm sold. Holy cow, it's a great movie too! Probably best to sell it to your girlfriend that way ... that is, unless she wants to see Bob Hoskins' pecker.

Judi Dench, turning Christopher Guest up to 11. What a very British movie Mrs Henderson Presents is. Judi Dench and Bob Hoskins, both playing it as plummy as a Cluedo professor, some saucy humour, The Blitz and an ex-Coronation Street regular (Thelma Barlow: Mavis "well I don't really know" Riley). Throw in some Monty Python and some self-righteous indignation in the Daily Mail letters page and it could be taught in Media Studies as "What Makes the British Tick". As such, it is very effective in its aim to fill us with a warm fuzzy feeling while still telling an interesting and occasionally touching story. It's far from weighty stuff, but it's far from flimsy too - nestling nicely between the two and taking the best from both sides. There's enough warmth to hook most viewers and enough wobbly bare bits to convert the rest. It deserves to do better than it will.

Kelly Reilly - no relation to Mavis. Bob Hoskins has obtained a new lease of life lately. His staggeringly good thug character in Unleashed was one of the finest performances by anyone all year and he carries the momentum to theatre manager Vivian Van Damm, a character so different that you'd never imagine a Rottweiler like Bob could pull it off - but he does. Even his uncharacteristically posh accent melts seemlessly into the mix so it isn't noticeable like you'd expect it to be. He and Judi Dench's Mrs Henderson easily carry the movie on their own, with everyone else hanging onto their coat tails as well as they can. Spinal Tap's Christopher Guest is almost unrecognisable as the lightly starched Lord Chamberlain seduced by Mrs Henderson to grant their required licentious licence, but his character adds considerable value, while Will Young is less impressive, never rising above the muddy depths of that-camp-singer-with-the-huge-mandible-from-Pop-Idol. Still, it's his first acting role, I'm sure he'll get better. Provided he gets the chance.

Mrs Henderson Presents is a marvellously likeable movie. There's a sense of camaraderie and spirit that is lacking in most movies nowadays and it lifts the film to a level that would have been unattainable with a bigger budget. It's British in all the right ways.

I enjoyed this film: 4/5

I think the average moviegoer will enjoy it: 4/5

Testosterone Satisfaction Rating: 4/5 - lots of nudity, tastefully done. Well, except the Bob Hoskins bit (shudder). Given the bits on display, a 12A rating is a bit of a surprise.

To enjoy this film you should: like toffy warm British jolliness.

Mrs Henderson Presents is on general release in the UK now.
