Walk The Line

Walk The Line

Cast: Joaquin Phoenix, Reese Witherspoon, Robert Patrick, Ginnifer Goodwin, Dallas Roberts.

Directed by James Mangold.

Story: Biopic of Johnny Cash.

Running Time: 2hrs 16 minutes.

UK Certificate 12A.

Walk The Line is the story of the life of Johnny Cash, the only person ever inducted in the Rock and Roll, Country, and Songwriters Halls of Fame, as written by the man in black himself. Though it could have benefited from a less partisan approach, it's still a watchable piece of Hollywood hooey.

Wackeen Feenicks has taken so many pills he thinks Johnny Cash can shoot rabbits with his gee-tar. I have to confess I'm only dimly aware of Johnny Cash. I don't know any of his songs and I don't even know what he looked like, but even I can tell that this story is splashed with the Hollywood rosebrush. Cash is presented very much as the underdog, the victim to whom shit happens and poor old singer boy has to deal with it. Call me cynical but I don't buy that. At least Ray had the balls to portray a less than perfect man, but there's a distinct testicular shortfall here. Then there's the singing. Cynicism wins over here too, as recently we've been asked to believe that the likes of Catherine Zeta Jones, Renee Zellweger, Kevin Spacey, Jamie Foxx all have astonishing singing voices, and now we're supposed to buy that Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon sing even better than the real-life stars they're impersonating. I don't think so. It's not helped by the fact that Phoenix's throat doesn't move like someone who's hollaring out a rock song - I'm not convinced he was singing at all when he was being filmed. I'm no in no doubt that it started out as their voices, but then they've surely been significantly altered in post-production. Hey, it's not a bad thing, they sound amazing on screen, it's just a little dishonest.

Reese Witherspoon is, like, soooo not into Johnny's drab black suit thing. Both the leads do a great job in their respective homages, with Joaquin Phoenix sounding more like his target than Reese Witherspoon (as well as scoring more in Scrabble) - though she sounds much better than her character June Carter ever did. Both performers have been deservedly nominated for next month's Oscars and the smart money's on Witherspoon to get hers, though in reality it should go to Felicity Huffman for Transamerica. Robert Patrick (who you may remember as the melty cyborg in Terminator 2) doesn't disgrace himself as Cash Snr but is in a rather different league to the two stars. The direction could do with a little work - there are several niggly problems that distract from the story, such as some jagged editing and a few shots of musicians who clearly aren't playing what the soundtrack is claiming (check out Jerry Lee Lewis - his hands are playing something else entirely). These niggles are only minor though, and don't detract from a high-class biopic with two excellent lead performances.

Walk The Line is a rootin' tootin' good movie, but isn't quite up to the very best of the genre due to its rose-tinted view of its star. It sits comfortably just below Ray and well above the Bobby Darin story Beyond The Sea. Well worth a watch, if only for the foot tapping Cash-ins.

I enjoyed this film: 4/5

I think the average moviegoer will enjoy it: 4/5

Testosterone Satisfaction Rating: 0/5 - scenes of narcotic dependency.

To enjoy this film you should: expect some sanitisation of the story.

Walk The Line is on general release in the UK now.
