The Constant Gardener

The Constant Gardener

Cast: Ralph Fiennes, Rachel Weisz, Danny Huston, Bill Nighy, Pete Postlethwaite.

Directed by Fernando Meirelles, from the book by John le Carré.

Story: A British diplomat searches for the truth about his wife in deep Africa.

Running Time: 2hrs 9 minutes.

UK Certificate 15.

The Constant Gardener is the kind of film that wins awards. Political, poignant and a little pompous, it will satisfy the literati but may well leave the average Joe wishing he'd spent the evening watering the roses instead.

Ralph Fiennes snags a sneaky peek down Rachel Weisz's top. Ralph Fiennes (from The English Patient) plays the constant gardener of the title, forever tinkering with the foliage in his diplomatic office. Rachel Weisz, his fiery and politically volatile wife, dies under mysterious circumstances, forcing Fiennes to confront his grief and uncover the truth behind his wife's untimely demise. The story is sensitively told and has a fresh look about it, as you'd expect from Fernando Meirelles, the director previously responsible for City of God, though some of the many close-ups can become a little disorientating. While they add to the hand-made feel of the production, the technique is over-used and can invade the viewer's awareness from time to time. The colourful and beautiful cinematography does, however, give us a great feel for the surroundings - showing without any shadow of a doubt that the majority of filming was indeed done on location.

Rachel Weisz regrets digging for coal when she sees the state of her nails at the market. Ralph Fiennes and Rachel Weisz are very good at these kind of roles and they gel together well. Weisz is often wasted in empty mush like The Mummy and Constantine, but here she's able to show us what she's made of, to considerable effect. Danny Huston makes a textbook is-he-a-goodie-or-a-baddie (pay attention Peter Sarsgaard) and Bill Nighy is as effective as ever in the bumbly toff character that pays his bills so reliably. In fact it was only Gerard McSorley who jolted me from the plot, but that was nothing to do with his performance - it was one of those "where the hell have I seen him before" moments (it turned out to be from Father Ted!). With such a cast and capable direction, The Constant Gardener should have been a winner, but I couldn't help drifting during the second half. The plot made sense and was pursued at an acceptable rate, but it didn't grab me. With a far from satisfactory ending, I was left with a sense of the movie having been made with awards in mind, rather than the audience.

The Constant Gardener is a well-made movie and has much to recommend, especially if you enjoy political award-seekers. For the average moviegoer however, I suspect you'll want to look elsewhere as this is by no means the masterpiece it is being hailed as. I see it picking up a nomination or two, but really it fails to cash in on its potential.

I enjoyed this film: 3/5

I think the average moviegoer will enjoy it: 3/5

Testosterone Satisfaction Rating: 1/5 - Rachel Weisz takes a bath in front of us, but she's heavily (prosthetically) pregnant at the time.

To enjoy this film you should be: a movie snob.

The Constant Gardener is on general release in the UK now.
