Forgetting Sarah Marshall

Forgetting Sarah Marshall

Story: Jilted man tries to get over it.

UK Certificate 15.

Yet another comedy from the Judd Apatow production line, Forgetting Sarah Marshall is reasonably funny but struggles to match its peers.

Paul Rudd advises Jason Segel not to stare so obviously at the huge wart on the barman's face. This one's written by and stars Jason Segel, who you may remember from How I Met Your Mother, or as one of the comedy sidekicks in Knocked Up. I can't honestly say that a star is born, but he does a fair old job, and certainly doesn't hide anything from the camera. Several times. Flopping around and everything. Unfortunately we fellas don't get any such treats1, though Kristen Bell (Veronica Mars) and Mila Kunis (the voice of Meg from Family Guy) are certainly easy on the eye, while Russell Brand is far less nauseating than usual because he's actually playing a pretentious pillock so it doesn't grate.

Russell Brand can never be sure if Kristen Bell is laughing at him or with him. You know, I reckon they looked at Knocked Up and saw that the Apatow comedy style went surprisingly well with the traditional romantic comedy story and decided to push the balance even further towards the female audience. The brashness of the humour has been toned down and the story is comfortably more yin than yang, which makes it a great date movie. Some of the technical aspects are a little loose - for example the lighting is distractingly bizarre in a couple of scenes - but you don't care about that. What you do care about is Paul Rudd's movie-stealing turn as the stoner surf teacher - clearly the highlight of the movie and the creator of most of the belly laughs.

Forgetting Sarah Marshall doesn't have the cast to challenge Knocked Up and lacks the original edge of Superbad, but it's funnier than Drillbit Taylor. Worthy of your attention.

I enjoyed this film: 4/5

I think the average moviegoer will enjoy it: 4/5

Testosterone Satisfaction Rating: 1/5 - 1Several opportunities for boobage, but it's all carefully covered, except the floppy bit that should have been. There's a topless photo supposedly of Mila Kunis, but it's a Photoshop special.

To enjoy this film you should be: on a date.

Forgetting Sarah Marshall was released in the UK on 23rd April 2008.
