Oh man, that was funny. Close the book on comedy of the year, it's right here.

(L-R) Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Jonah Hill and Michael Cera are strangely perturbed by a photo of a hairy potato. This is the next in line of the hopefully prolific line of new comedies from the Judd Apatow squad. Starting with The 40 Year Old Virgin and moving onto last month's Knocked Up, this is the best of the lot. It's puerile, it's crude, it made me laugh more than any movie has in a long time. The three main guys are brilliant together - Jonah Hill, who was one of the comedy sidekicks in Knocked Up and part of the Apatow team, Michael Cera, the brilliantly awkward son in Arrested Development, and new guy Christopher Mintz-Plasse who looks like he's been in the game for years. The trio work perfectly together, and the movie comes alive because of their chemistry.

Bill Hader realises that the picture of the hairy potato is actually Seth Rogen's ballsack. It's about this point that I usually say something bad for balance, but the things people will criticise it for - its immaturity, the low-IQ humour - is exactly the stuff that makes it work. As with any comedy there will be people who won't like it, but there will definitely be more hits than misses, particularly among men under 50. Personally I was guffawing away the whole way through, there weren't even the usual dips while the plot gets progressed - it's all quality. Even the backdrop to the end credits tops off the laughter.

Superbad is a riot from beginning to end, and there can only be more of these movies to come. Bring them on.

I enjoyed this film: 5/5

I think the average moviegoer will enjoy it: 5/5

Testosterone Satisfaction Rating: 3/5 - largely male humour. Apparently the F word is used 186 times, but it never seems out of place.

To enjoy this film you should: be amused by childishly rude humour.

Superbad was released in the UK on 14th September 2007.

James, you're an idiot. Apart from very occasional sniggers, this was without question one of the worst films I have ever seen in my entire life. 0/5.
