A comedy about pregnancy and the ensuing relationship ... hoo-wee ... I can feel you hovering over the Back button already, but wait! Unbelievably, this one's a child prodigy instead of a screaming bratty vomit factory.

Seth Rogen and Katherine Heigl learn that their baby is the spitting image of David Mellor. Welcome, new breed of comedy, come in and have a muffin. The 40 Year Old Virgin gets better every time you watch it, and it has moulded the public viewing consciousness to be bang up ready for this. The production and acting team is similar to the aforementioned virgin, with Seth Rogen (the pube-haired one) in the lead role and Paul Rudd giving superb comic support, bouncing perfectly off Rogen. Katherine Heigl (Grey's Anatomy) takes the second lead and wisely plays it straight, leaving the tomfoolery to Rogen, Rudd and the obligatory comedy sidekicks, this time comfortably created by Jonah Hill (currently in Superbad) and Jason Segel (Alyson Hannigan's hubbie in How I Met Your Mother). It's a cast that is necessarily good and wonderfully suited to the material.

Leslie Mann and Paul Rudd don't know who David Mellor is, so they show them a picture. It's not pretty. As far as the story goes, it's all very predictable stuff and not really very entertaining. The quality is in the dialogue and the banter between the pre-New-Age cavemen. It's daft, crass and often puerile, but invariably hilarious - and the kids are stunningly good. You can tell they've grown up with the actors as they're so comfortable in a way that kids just can't fake - and looking at the cast list, their surnames are Apatow ... and so is the director's. Oh, and Leslie Mann (who plays their Mum) is actually their Mum, and is also Mrs Judd Apatow. That's that little mystery solved then! Oh, and if you're wondering why Steve Carell isn't still in the team ... he does show up in a cameo. Naturally, as with all comedies, you need to gel with the sense of humour, but if you liked Virgin then you'll be right at home here.

Knocked Up completely surprised me. Although it kind of works as a romantic comedy, it's really just a blokes' comedy in disguise. So take your girlfriend along and don't show her this review first...

I enjoyed this film: 5/5

I think the average moviegoer will enjoy it: 4/5

Testosterone Satisfaction Rating: 2/5 - lots of male-oriented comedy, a couple of flashes of boob.

To enjoy this film you should: convince your girlfriend it's a romcom so you can score points AND laugh your socks off.

Knocked Up was released in the UK on 24th August 2007.
