Beautiful sunny day or comedy lobster sunburn? It all depends on the strength of your Ambre Solaire.

Cillian Murphy volunteers for sunblock distribution duty. Danny Boyle is no stranger to surrealism, having brought us the seminal Trainspotting and the delightful Millions. With Sunshine, the sci-fi nature necessarily limits the bizarre tomfoolery, but it still sneaks in at the end. You never know what to expect from a Danny Boyle movie, and although the story is very derivatively Alien-esque, it still manages the odd surprise. Cillian Murphy, star of Boyle's imminently-sequelled 28 Days Later and Batman Begins, is terrifically powerful in what could loosely be called a lead role, and is well supported by Rose Byrne, Cliff Curtis and Benedict Wong. However, it's Chris Evans (flamey boy in Fantastic Four) who impresses most, in a flatly stereotypical role that could have been instantly forgettable in less capable hands. Mark Strong, one of my Chris Evans, Cillian Murphy and Troy Garity audition for new boy band Smokin' Boyz. favourite actors-du-jour, is completely unrecognisable in mountains of makeup but is still memorable ... which is more than can be said for some of the outrageous daftness in the plot. We can accept that our intrepid crew is toodling off to drop a bomb the size of Manhattan in the dying sun to reignite it - it's an axiom of the movie, explained at the start, so we take it on board. It's not, however, so easy to stay involved when the how-are-they-going-to-get-out-of-this-one moments are resolved with such ludicrous straight-faced preposterousness. They're not as mind-numbing as that atrocious turd The Core, but the very fact that it gets mentioned in the same sentence is a fairly damning indictment. I almost want to think that Boyle is being ironic and poking fun at macho chest-beating sci-fi such as Armageddon, but I really think he's being serious. It's this rather dozy plot that will put off many viewers, and it hides Boyle's charismatic direction when it should be complementing it. A more Solaris-ey orientation might have been a better tactic.

You'll enjoy Sunshine if you've been pleased by Danny Boyle's previous pictures, but if you're in it for the sci-fi, you'll be massively disappointed. I enjoyed it quite a lot, but I suspect many of you won't.

I enjoyed this film: 4/5

I think the average moviegoer will enjoy it: 2/5

Testosterone Satisfaction Rating: 1/5 - not a lot to get the sap rising.

To enjoy this film you should be: unexcited by sci-fi.

Sunshine was released in the UK on 6th April 2007.
