Ah, the low-budget British movie. How we love it. Millions is a great example of creativity over cashflow and is a pleasure to watch from beginning to end.

Guess what Daisy's been doing to your Daddy. Millions is the story of two schoolboy brothers who stumble across a bag full of cash - two hundred grand - and explore the possibilities of what to do with the wonga. Set in the near future, the pound is due to be replaced by the euro in a matter of weeks, so they don't have long to get shot of it. Of course, they can't take it to the bank and change it - that would set off alarm bells, so what are they to do? When you're ten, the answers aren't quite as you might expect, but they're highly entertaining and completely believable. Frank Boyce's script is fresh and funny and the presentation is wonderfully inventive, as you'd expect from the director of Trainspotting, Shallow Grave, 28 Days Later and A Life Less Ordinary. The opening scene, for example, features the boys lying on the empty pitch of their soon-to-be-built new house. We enter the boys' imaginations to see the house being built over them, brick by brick, cable by cable, window by window. It's a cracking scene thanks to its pace and freshness and there are scenes like this dotted throughout. The last 20 minutes or so are a little less engaging due to the sentimental tying up of the story's shoelaces, but it still comes together nicely in a double bow.

Pull my finger. Director Danny Boyle coaxes great performances from the pint-sized leads - although I found ten-year old Alex Etel's delivery a little stilted. Fourteen-year old Lewis McGibbon is marvellous though - better than many full-fat actors. James Nesbitt (Cold Feet, Murphy's Law) is typically charismatic as the single dad and Daisy Donovan (Daisy Daisy, The 11 O'clock Show) provides nice wide-eyed support as the new love interest and there are amusing cameos from stalwarts Leslie Phillips and Alun Armstrong, who pops up as one of the many saints that little Damian has imaginary conversations with and offers a highly amusing take on the "loaves and fishes" bible story. Rounding off the memorable appearances, Christopher Fulford jettisons his nice guy telly demeanour to provide a chilling psycho baddie who you definitely wouldn't want to be on the wrong side of, no matter how many hallucinated saints you had on your side.

Millions is an excellent, fun, uplifting piece of cinema, which was just the ticket after the morose Imaginary Heroes. Even if you're a die-hard action fan, I defy you to not raise a smile. Get the girlfriend to think it's her idea and go along grudgingly - you'll be surprised.

I enjoyed this film: 5/5

I think the average moviegoer will enjoy it: 4/5

Testosterone Satisfaction Rating: 0/5

To enjoy this film you should be: in a light-hearted mood.

Millions is on general release in the UK now.
