Fantastic Four

Fantastic Four

Cast: Ioan Gruffudd, Jessica Alba, Chris Evans, Michael Chiklis, Julian McMahon.

Directed by Tim Story.

Story: Superheroes in a convenient four-pack.

Running Time: 1hr 46 minutes.

Certificate PG.

I love superhero movies. They seem somehow inspirational with their be-all-you-can-be message and it's childishly fun to imagine what it would be like to have special powers. Fantastic Four delivers on all counts with no less than four new superheroes discovering their talents in an irreverent and big budget way. Bring it on.

One of the four doesn't use Oil of Olay. Can you tell which? Adapted from the Marvel comic, Fantastic Four features Ioan Gruffudd (King Arthur), Jessica Alba (Sin City), Chris Evans (Not Another Teen Movie) and Michael Chiklis (The Shield) becoming Mr Fantastic, The Invisible Woman, The Human Torch and The Thing respectively in their fight against baddie Julian McMahon (Nip/Tuck). With a name like Dr van Doom, he was never going to become a monk, was he? Ioan Gruffudd shows his star quality and Jessica Alba confirms that she's employed for her looks. Most watchable is Chris Evans - not the ginger tosser from TV - largely thanks to some particularly funny lines and scenes that had me laughing out loud. I wasn't expecting that at all - some high quality comedy works wonders in getting the viewer on side. Because it kept me chuckling, I was more than happy to buy into the daft plot without questioning and neither the predictability nor the reliance on special effects bothered me one jot. I enjoyed the humanistic story, the infighting between the newly super team and the pleasing level of energy. In all honesty, it's pretty corny, but I didn't care because it made me laugh. Call me shallow if you like, but it works for me.

Fantastic Four is empty, crowd-pleasing fun. It makes no attempt to do anything new with the genre, but it's made professionally and with a touch of mischief so it's thoroughly enjoyable. Connoisseurs may criticise its lack of innovation, but you don't criticise a rump steak for being just a bit of a cow's arse. I loved it.

I enjoyed this film: 5/5

I think the average moviegoer will enjoy it: 4/5

Testosterone Satisfaction Rating: 2/5 Your usual feast of cracking special effects.

To enjoy this film you should: value humour over freshness.

Fantastic Four is released in the UK on 22nd July.

It's Globbering time as The Thing would say in the comics that I grew up with and thankfully it gets said in the film as well (twice)

This film had no right to be as good as it was, but it's in the same vein as all the other Marvel comic movies (with the exception of the latest BatMan). We have Mr Fantastic (Gruffudd), The Human Tourch (Evans) and the Thing (Chicklis) without forgetting Invisible Girl (Alba) – why could this not be a 15 and her invisible powers fail at the right moment!! The story is broke scientist goes to billionaire for loan of space station, big accident, mutations, lots of CGI, some funny (and stupid) lines hero's beat baddy (almost) time for a sequel, bit of emotions for good measure the end!!

Don't get me wrong I loved the movie and the special effects but don't expect more than a shallow story and for gods sake leave the adult at home and don't ask questions, if you do this you'll love it if you don't you'll hate it and want to destroy those beloved comics you enjoyed so much as a kid. I hope they do a sequel cause in my mind it going to be better in the same way as Spider-Man 2 and X-Men 2.
