School For Scoundrels

Cast: Jon Heder, Billy Bob Thornton, Michael Clarke Duncan, Jacinda Barrett. Directed by John Phillips. Story: Guys learn to be bastards. Running Time: 1hr 40 minutes. UK Certificate 12A.

School For Scoundrels starts very promisingly, but it soon becomes apparent that its chat-up patter is only good enough to get us into bed, after which it slips on its pants and legs it for the door.

Jon Heder, star of Napoleon Dynamite, doesn't stray far from his roots in playing a nice guy who gets walked all over by all and sundry. Arrested Development's David Cross helpfully gives him a number for Billy Bob Thornton's eponymous school, and so the tale begins. The story is complete nonsense, with none of it ever ringing true, but it's not confident enough with its humour to make that acceptable. It plays like it believes in the story, which is where it fails. The laughs are there and they're frequent enough to warrant your attention, but the whole effect is spoiled somewhat when we just don't believe what's happening. Heder is amiable and goofy as only he can be, while Billy Bob Thornton is far less involved than in Bad Santa and The Ice Harvest. Michael Clarke Duncan (The Green Mile) has some nice moments as the big bad-ass black guy / classroom assistant, but I can't help expecting more from the director of Road Trip, Old School and Starsky and Hutch.

School For Scoundrels is funny enough, but it's not complete. With a better screenplay it could have been a hit, but unfortunately it's just another course in the curriculum.
