The Ice Harvest

Cast: John Cusack, Billy Bob Thornton, Connie Nielsen, Oliver Platt, Randy Quaid. Directed by Harold Ramis. Story: A pair of embezzlers find the aftermath of the crime is more trouble than the crime itself. Running Time: 1hr 28 minutes. UK Certificate 15.

The Ice Harvest is a noir adventure with a similar taste to the Coen brothers' Fargo. Bravely, it dives off the main road into the fields and comes up smelling of roses.

John Cusack (Must Love Dogs) plays a lawyer who's swindled two million dollars from his mob clients with the help of his partner Billy Bob Thornton (Bad Santa). Come Christmas Eve, things get slippery, and not just the icy roads. The humour is pitched slightly more darkly than Harold Ramis's usual fare (Caddyshack, Analyze This, Groundhog Day) and is all the better for it. John Cusack is right at home in a role like this - drawing on his performance in Being John Malkovich and placing it in a more mainstream scenario. Billy Bob Thornton revels in belligerent amoral characters and so the two play nicely off each other, complemented as they are by a pleasantly inebriated Oliver Platt, who you'll recognise when you see. He has some great lines and delivers them beautifully with the perfectly slurred accuracy that only an accomplished pisshead can. Together the team are very watchable, without really achieving much, and as such The Ice Harvest is the kind of film that critics will struggle with, but the average moviegoer will thoroughly enjoy without being able to put their finger on why.

It's great to watch a movie with a fresh feel to it. The Ice Harvest isn't uproariously funny, but there are plenty of moments that raise a chuckle, and the non-comedy moments are thoroughly compelling - it's a movie that's pleasant to watch. Try it - you won't regret it.
