Good Luck Chuck

Good Luck Chuck

Cast: Dane Cook, Jessica Alba, Dan Fogler.

Directed by first-time director Mark Helfrich.

Story: A man is cursed with a string of hot women wanting to bang him. Wait, that can't be right...

Running Time: 1hr 36 minutes.

UK Certificate 15.

Either I'm turning into a girl or romantic comedies are getting better. Perhaps both. Good Luck Chuck has chick-flick written all over it, so cover me with chasseur and call me a chick.

Dan Fogler is reassured by Dane Cook that she wasn't really a man. It's a pretty daft premise, but one with promise. Dane Cook (Employee of the Month) has been cursed so that every girl he shags finds her true love in the next guy she dates. We have that spelled out to us twice, just in case we weren't paying attention the first time - thanks for that. Word gets out and lucky old Mr Cook has to beat them off with a stick - well he would if he wanted them to go away that is. Things get tricky, however, when doll-faced penguin obsessive Jessica Alba (Fantastic Four) captures his heart - will she succumb to the curse? Ooo I really can't tell where this is going, can you?

Jessica Alba has no idea that Dane Cook slipped some Rohypnol into her ice cream. Fortunately amongst the ordinary and predictable shmush that keeps the ladies cooing, there is the obligatory brash and loudmouthed sidekick. Dan Fogler (the star of Balls of Fury) models his lardy companion on pretty much every funny buddy from Superbad to My Super Ex-Girlfriend, and he's completely hilarious. Without him there would be no comedy, as the jokes in the script are average at best, and Jessica Alba's pratfalling, although convincing, isn't nearly enough to carry the humour baton on its own. I did like the penguins though, I can't imagine how they got them to do what they did ... if indeed they're real. And Alba is impressively natural with them - top marks.

Good Luck Chuck is far from memorable, but Dan Fogler's despicable buddy routine will be enough to keep you amused while your girlfriend pines over the romance. An ideal date movie.

I enjoyed this film: 4/5

I think the average moviegoer will enjoy it: 4/5

Testosterone Satisfaction Rating: 2/5 - several pairs (and one triumvirate!) of boobs make their welcome appearance.

To enjoy this film you should be: on a date.

Good Luck Chuck was released in the UK on 9th November 2007.
