Employee of the Month

Employee of the Month

Cast: Dane Cook, Dax Shepard, Jessica Simpson, Efren Ramirez.

Directed by Greg Coolidge.

Story: Clash of the supermarker cashiers.

Running Time: 1hr 43 minutes.

UK Certificate 12A.

Americans must consume an awful lot of pot, judging by the number of comedies that pander to that state of mind. Employee of the Month is the latest, and is merely a passable example.

(L-R) Dax Shepard, Jessica Simpson and Dane Cook demonstrate the joys of supermarket work. There's a whole shopping trolley load of where-do-I-know-them-from going on here. Dax Shepard: Without a Paddle. Jessica Simpson: Daisy Duke. Efren Ramirez: Napoleon Dynamite. The plot structure: every other production-line teen movie you've ever seen. On top of that, leading man Dane Cook looks spookily like Ryan Reynolds and Dax Shepard seems to be doing a Zach Braff impression as they scrap with each other to win Employee of the Month in their massive supermarket, in the belief that Jessica Simpson will shag the winner. Having said that, they're both entertaining and Shepard in particular has a certain screen charm. Jessica Simpson is very easy on the eye, and the obligatory comedy sidekicks are given some mildly amusing material to play with, but you can't help thinking that we've been there so many times before, but with more energy and originality. There are some nice smaller touches that could pass by the first time, justifying a second viewing, but on the whole there's nothing to lift Employee of the Month above the countless other movies in the genre.

Although it's pleasant enough, Employee of the Month is certainly no Movie of the Month. Suitable for a beer-and-pizza night, but definitely not worth a special trip to the multiplex.

I enjoyed this film: 3/5

I think the average moviegoer will enjoy it: 3/5

Testosterone Satisfaction Rating: 1/5 - no naughtiness, plenty of stereotypes to poke fun at.

To enjoy this film you should be: giggly.

Employee of the Month was released in the UK on 5th January.
