Run, Fatboy, Run

Run, Fatboy, Run

Cast: Simon Pegg, Dylan Moran, Hank Azaria, Thandie Newton, Harish Patel.

Directed by David Schwimmer.

Story: Lazy man enters the London marathon to try and win his missus back.

Running Time: 1hr 40 minutes.

UK Certificate 12A.

Hmmm. Can anyone else hear cash registers chinging? Run, Fatboy, Run is pretty good, but it would've been better without the neon dollar signs flashing throughout.

Simon Pegg thinks he left the iron on. First of all, the title's wrong. It doesn't scan and it doesn't hang right in this country. "Run Fatty Run" would have been a far better title, and they must have considered it and discarded it. Why? Because "Fatboy" sounds better in American, and there's more greenback to be had over there. Second, it's not "The London Marathon" that Simon Pegg enters, it's "The Nike River Run". Anyone ever heard of that? No? I wonder why they called it that. Any guesses?

Thirdly, David Schwimmer's directing. He was always the weak link in Friends and has been distinctly underwhelming in everything he's attempted since, and I can't help feeling that he's knocked the Hot Fuzzness out of this one. That, by the way, is the last cash-grabbing detail - the fact that Hot Fuzz made a squillion bucks so they've knocked another quickie out off the back of it. Can't really blame them I suppose, but it seems such a waste.

Dylan Moran traded his hairbrush for these rags, which he intends to distil into vodka. When you're not on a movie's side, it can be very hard to be swung. When David Walliams pops up, it seems like a cynical cameo rather than a funny bonus and it can be easy to scoff at some of the more obvious jokes. However, fortunately the movie is saved by its magnificent cast. We all know Simon Pegg is brilliant at this stuff, and Dylan Moran (from Black Books) is always immensely watchable. Thandie Newton (Crash) tweaks her nose in all the right places and Hank Azaria (the voice of many Simpsons characters) fills the suave bad guy shoes admirably. The script is good, but not excellent - plenty good enough to work well with this cast - so in the end it manages to pull off the impressive coup of being an entertaining comedy episode, despite the one-dimensional and painfully predictable plot and some sporadically uninspired directing. And the ending, despite being telegraphed through every frame, was surprisingly emotional and unexpectedly satisfying. It's something in my eye, really.

Run, Fatboy, Run has many flaws, but the cast is strong enough to push through the wall and make it to the finish. It's no Hot Fuzz, but then very little is.

I enjoyed this film: 4/5

I think the average moviegoer will enjoy it: 4/5

Testosterone Satisfaction Rating: 0/5 - Hank Azaria and Dylan Moran's arses don't count as nudity around here.

To enjoy this film you should: not mind the blatant cashing-in.

Run, Fatboy, Run was released in the UK on 7th September 2007.
