Sper-loosh. That's the sound of another six quid dropping into the drain. That's the sound you'd be better off hearing rather than spending it on a ticket to the weary and weak remake of The Poseidon Adventure.

Josh Lucas regrets leaving his brolly at home. Wolfgang Petersen has had a rollercoaster of a career, much like his movies, but he does have a habit of making movies that should be good but end up dull. Starting with the excellent In The Line of Fire with Clint Eastwood, it's been downhill from there, with Outbreak, Air Force One, The Perfect Storm and most recently Troy. Don't get me wrong, they all have plenty going for them, but none have reached the potential you felt they were capable of - and so it is with Poseidon. Every great visual effect is countered with a silly plot development, every clever detail has a sloppy and implausible twin, every well acted scene has a hammy cheeseburger as a riposte. It's a movie that with a bit more care and thought could've been a smash, but will instead, appropriately enough, sink without a trace.

Kurt Russell and Josh Lucas try to rescue Richard Dreyfuss's career. For those not familiar with The Poseidon Adventure, the cruise liner Poseidon is overturned by a "rogue wave" (that's the technical term, we're told), leaving the survivors struggling to escape from a vessel not designed to float upside down. Events open with a cracking panning shot of the boat, with the camera sweeping seemlessly all around the ship before settling on hero Josh Lucas enjoying the sunset. Mighty impressive, visually, which is where Poseidon really scores. Whether it's the watery mayhem or the custom-made upside down sets, Poseidon nails the visuals completely and satisfyingly. The same cannot be said for the supporting script - and that's what it feels like - nothing more than a mechanism to link together some special effects. Average in some scenes, achingly bad in others, the plot seems to have been thrown together by a committee of mentally challenged baboons, between bananas. Richard Dreyfuss (looking dead already) and Kurt Russell attempt to steer the ship away from the rocks, but it's all in vain. This iceberg is made of magnets and there's no escaping it.

Poseidon is pretty awful - but the special effects are good enough to entertain, even if the action is too daft to even begin to believe. You might as well leave after the wave hits.

I enjoyed this film: 2/5

I think the average moviegoer will enjoy it: 3/5

Testosterone Satisfaction Rating: 3/5 - a high body count in what the censors might describe as "scenes of extended peril".

To enjoy this film you should be: a fan of 70s action cliches.

Poseidon was released in the UK on 1st June.
