The Number 23

The Number 23

Cast: Jim Carrey, Virginia Madsen, Danny Huston, Rhona Mitra, Logan Lerman, Lynn Collins.

Directed by Joel Schumacher, written by Fernley Phillips.

Story: A man becomes convinced that the number 23 is controlling his life.

Running Time: 1hr 35 minutes.

UK Certificate 15.

Jim Carrey is doing well with his serious roles, making The Number 23 a good bet for bums on seats. Unfortunately the story's a beanbag full of horseshit.

Jim Carrey suddenly realises there isn't a chapter 24 to make things end plausibly. What a staggering disappointment. I can only assume the writer Fernley Phillips received that daft email that we all got some years ago claiming the number 11 had an ethereal significance, as it went on to add up the digits in various evil dates and numbers that all spookily made 11. Unfortunately that load of hooey is a whole lot more convincing than this cobblers. Jim Carrey starts seeing the number 23 everywhere in his life and thinks it's "controlling" him - it's one of those keep-you-guessing stories that really pisses you off by finally offering an explanation that doesn't even slightly fit together. The car on the way home was full of what-about-this-bit reminiscences, but unlike Hot Fuzz last week, we were laughing at the stupidity and sieveness of the plot rather than any intentional comedy. If there'd been an Oscar for Worst Original Screenplay, the other nominees wouldn't have even bothered showing up.

Virginia Madsen does a spot of celebrity cheffing rather than go back on set. I can't share any specifics with you without giving the game away, which is a shame because there are a fistful of asinine moments to discuss. Had it been written by someone less simian, it could have been a really gripping movie, because Jim Carrey is engaging (though perhaps a mite over-intense at times) and Virginia Madsen (Sideways) is always reliable. The cinematography is excellent too, with some cracking comic-book style scenes that reminded me of Sin City. In fact, the first half hour or so was really rather good - but that only meant it had further to fall once the sheer incompetence of the plot started to invade. Honestly, it's beyond me how this ever got through any screening process without SOMEONE going, "errr .. hang on a minute, isn't this all bollocks?"

The Number 23 is a criminally wasted opportunity. Director Joel Schumacher seems to fluctuate wildly between good movies (Phone Booth, Falling Down, The Lost Boys) and terrible movies (Batman & Robin) - The Number 23 qualifies as the latter purely because of the monumental ineptitude of the writer.

I enjoyed this film: 2/5

I think the average moviegoer will enjoy it: 2/5

Testosterone Satisfaction Rating: 1/5 - I can't recall anything warranting the 15 rating. Well, except a complete void of plausibility that even a child could see through.

To enjoy this film you should: believe that you'll get good luck by forwarding this review to ten of your friends within the next two minutes. If you don't, your nipples will turn into carrots.

The Number 23 was released in the UK on 23rd February 2007. GASP! Spooky!
