Nanny McPhee

Story: A wizened old nanny takes care of seven brats.

UK Certificate U.

Nanny McPhee is a modern-day Mary Poppins, with more warts and less of the spoonful-of-sugar nonsense. The kids will love it and the adults will pretend to be there for the kids, secretly chuckling away. The sneaky so-and-so's.

Don't fancy yours much. Nanny McPhee is Emma Thompson's baby - she's already the only person ever to have won Oscars for acting and screenplay (for Howard's End and Sense and Sensibility) and puts those talents to good use here, adapting Christianna Brand's Nurse Matilda books for the big screen. Thompson oozes self-confidence in the lead role, requiring little more than a twitch of the eye or a tilt of the head to convey the necessary authority. We'd all be like that if we could make things happen just by banging a stick - but we're not all David Beckham (arf). Colin Firth plays it straight as the incompetent father and the remaining cast manufacture varying degrees of panto, from the relatively sober kids through buxom and very pink Celia Imrie to the bouncing but brilliant Imelda Staunton and a rubbery looking Angela Lansbury. Thomas Sangster is particularly worthy amongst the kids as eldest reprobate Simon, but considering most of the other pint-sized provocateurs have no experience, they're all impressively good - and most importantly, it looks like they're having a great time doing it.

Colin Firth berates the kids for not using a hankie. The special effects warrant a mention - they integrate comfortably with the action without ever trumpeting their presence; even when the donkey stands up and poses, it doesn't scream of interference. In fact, even with clever tricks such as this, the overriding feel is one of an old-school family movie, with the kids dropping spiders onto the excitable women and the pleasingly old-fashioned family values. There's even a luridly coloured pie fight where all the grown-ups join in. This, too, looks like it was great fun, and that's the magic that director Kirk Jones has managed to capture. It feels fun and the kids will love it. It's hard to recommend for kidless adults - unless you sleep with a bed full of teddy bears - but if you're on tenterhooks for the release of Doom then you'll hardly be reading this anyway.

Do not hesitate in taking your family to see Nanny McPhee - well, assuming they've already seen Wallace and Gromit, that is. Then after that, go into Corpse Bride and, if there's still time, pop into Sky High. The little munchkins have never had a half-term so full of ankle-bitery delights.

I enjoyed this film: 3/5 - but that's largely because the only kids with me were the irritating little tits rabbiting away on the back row.

I think the average moviegoer will enjoy it: 5/5 - assuming the average moviegoer is in a kiddie-laden family.

Testosterone Satisfaction Rating: 0/5 - they say bum and fart, and even fumble with the odd fanny, but in a Play School kind of way.

To enjoy this film you should be: amongst kids.

Nanny McPhee is on general release in the UK now.

Emma Thompson wrote the screenplay and stars in the film Nanny McPhee. She has adapted the film from the Nurse Matilda books which I can only assume go along the lines of the film as I've never read them.

It's a children's film so the story is simple, if you think along the lines of the story in Mary Poppins you won't go far wrong. Thompson is an ugly Mary Poppins who can't sing, she takes her time bringing order to the Brown household using minimal magic and 5 lessons. The CGI team gets to play about a bit before Firth twigs that MacDonald will make a good mother for the kids. Happy ending!

Firth, Thompson and MacDonald are very good in the main roles but the character of Simon (Thomas Sangster) is very good and holds the other kids together, whilst Lansbury, Jacobi and Barlow carry off their smaller roles with ease!

Don't expect too much from the film, as with most feel good kiddie movies it's not meant to be taken seriously, but it is a good way to spend a couple of hours
