Nacho Libre

Nacho Libre

Cast: Jack Black, Efren Ramirez, Ana de la Reguera, Hector Jimenez.

Written and directed by Jared Hess.

Story: Wrestling monk.

Running Time: 1hr 32 minutes.

UK Certificate 12A.

Nacho Libre is a deadpan comedy that owes a massive debt to Napoleon Dynamite whilst at the same time developing a character all of its own. It's surreal and obtuse - and great fun to boot.

Jack Black has his nachos liberated. There aren't many actors who can do a blockbuster one minute (King Kong) and a low budget black comedy the next. George Clooney can do it and, with a very different approach, so can Jack Black. Nacho Libre looks like it was made on a budget of a pie and a pint (though I suspect that may be deliberate and not entirely true), but it nevertheless succeeds far better than many mega-movies. Jack Black is hilarious as the chubby Spanish monk with wrestling aspirations and the direction is simply inspired. Borrowing heavily from his own surprise hit Napoleon Dynamite in style and cinematographic techniques, Jared Hess succeeds in creating a mesmeric comedy world that will delight those who get it, and disgust those who don't. Whichever you are, if you ever find yourself talking about movies at dinner parties, you need to see this one, as it will be the Sideways of 2006. In other words, smug wankers will raise the subject expecting you not to have seen it - and they'll pretend to like it while actually not getting it in the slightest. We hate those people, so you owe it to the hoi polloi to rub their noses in it. Do it for me.

Ana de la Reguera is powerless against the draw of a wobbly belly. A movie like Nacho Libre couldn't be made without the supreme confidence of its director. The accents are awful, but the director knows that, and uses it to his advantage. Jack Black's wobbly physique is exploited to its fullest, and the camera repeatedly shoots half a screen of sky above the stars' heads to intentionally reduce their presence. It's a risky mix that Hess won't be able to maintain when he starts to command big money, so enjoy it while it lasts. Nacho Libre is a rare treat that reminds me of sports like motor racing and snooker - great fun when there's no money in it and everyone's doing it for the love of it - but as soon as it becomes recognised as a money spinner, it'll lose its magic. Jared Hess will get no better than Nacho Libre and Napoleon Dynamite - mark my words. I hope I'm wrong.

Nacho Libre is loads of fun for those of us who like our humour a little darker than average. It's not mainstream by any stretch of the imagination, but if you can laugh at things that are just plain silly, I urge you to give it a try. You may not like it, but conversely you could miss your potentially favourite movie of the year. Only you can decide.

I enjoyed this film: 5/5

I think the average moviegoer will enjoy it: 3/5 - it's definitely an acquired taste.

Testosterone Satisfaction Rating: 0/5 - not for the jocks.

To enjoy this film you should: have a left-field sense of humour.

Nacho Libre was released in the UK on 18th August.
