Monsters vs Aliens

Directed by Rob Letterman and Conrad Vernon. Story: Secretly stashed freaks take on an alien invasion. Running Time: 1hr 34 minute. UK certificate PG, US certificate PG.

Monsters vs Aliens is another quality animation - but I'm suffering from déjà vu.

Now don't get me wrong, if this movie had been released as recently as two years ago, I'd probably be raving about it - and it is entertaining enough. It's just that we've seen all this before. The standard of animated movies these days is so immense that merely "good" looks like "ho hum" in comparison. I couldn't see anything in any aspect of the movie that hadn't already been done in Toy Story, let alone the Shreks or my current fave Kung Fu Panda. Dare I say it, 2001's Monsters Inc is better. Seth Rogen is excellent though, as the blob Bob - the character matches the voice perfectly and provides pretty much all the humour - humour which, unexpectedly, contains very little but the odd movie reference to please the adults.

Monsters vs Aliens is a solidly good animation and is still way better than most of the live action movies out there, it's just not the genre-busting movie we were expecting. Come to think of it, I've yet to see a really good movie that has a 3D version ... I wonder if that's a coincidence ...
