The Lake House

The Lake House

Cast: Keanu Reeves, Sandra Bullock, Christopher Plummer, Dylan Walsh.

Directed by Alejandro Agresti.

Story: A romance between two people who live two years apart. Hmmm.

Running Time: 1hr 38 minutes.

UK Certificate PG.

The Lake House is a rather light romance with Keanu Reeves. Still reading? Brave soul. It won't surprise you to learn that it passes nothing remotely approaching muster.

They don't look separated by two years, do they? Apparently John Cusack (from The Ice Harvest and Must Love Dogs turned down the lead role before it was offered to Keanu Reeves, which is a shame as he would have made a much better fist of it. Keanu has his moments here, but can't shake the overall impression of a drama school drop-out. Sandra Bullock is, as you would expect, much better, making the most of her lines in a way Reeves can only dream of, but it's not enough to lift the story out of the hole it has dug for itself. You see, the story centres around the eponymous Lake House, which Keanu has just moved into in the year 2004. He exchanges letters with Ms Bullock, who lives in the same house in 2006, by putting them in the magical mailbox outside the house. To simplify the storytelling, we see much of this communication as if they're speaking out loud to each other. Now ignoring the fact that they actually have to go to the mailbox each time one of them speaks, the whole premise is fatally underused. There isn't a person alive, for example, who wouldn't have asked Sandra who wins the next major sporting event in 2004. This would also have had the convenient side effect of clearly proving the time distortion, which is accepted far too readily by both parties.

Sandra Bullock sulks about the giant surfboard Keanu Reeves bought her. So it's not a cerebral movie then, but does the romance work? Well, partially, but not in any significant way. They fall for each other very quickly and without much in the way of depth or emotion, and the plot is so dumb that it's hard not to shout things at the screen instead of melting in marshmallowy schmook like we're supposed to do. Things are further hindered with a great clod-hopping clue about where the plot is heading, then when it gets there it abandons all the rules that have been set up so far just to reach the required ending. I guess if you're a sucker for romance and you never stop to think about a plot, you might get a warm glow if you try hard enough, but really, this is a nine-year old's plot forced into a movie. Apparently it is adapted from the Korean movie "Siworae", which is very highly regarded. I can only assume that one had better scriptwriters.

The Lake House is as nonsensical as it is dull. With a better male lead and much more thought put into the screenplay, it could have worked. The cinematography is nice and the tone is soft and pleasing, but you need to be able to disregard the absurdity of the story to get anything from it, which I couldn't. Not recommended.

I enjoyed this film: 2/5

I think the average moviegoer will enjoy it: 3/5

Testosterone Satisfaction Rating: 0/5

To enjoy this film you should be: comfortable with impossible plottage.

The Lake House was released in the UK on 23rd June.
