I Want Candy - a British comedy about sex. We love those don't we? This one, however, just doesn't have enough balls and so doesn't live up to the genre.

Carmen Electra tries to work out what the fifth way is. Carmen Electra's been everywhere on TV this month, in a desperate attempt to drag some punters in. Fortunately, because she's not very good, she doesn't actually appear very much in I Want Candy, despite playing the titular porn star Candy Fiveways. Instead we concentrate on the far more watchable duo of Tom Riley and Tom Burke, a pair of media students who, through a series of not-very-interesting plot details, find themselves making a porn movie. Both these actors are new to me, but they really are excellent in a likeable-Brit-scallywag kind of way. The charisma of these two, particularly Riley, is what holds the movie together amongst a sea of nearly funny moments. It's titters, not guffaws, that permeate Candy, rather like that other pappy porn-movie-movie, The Girl Next Door.

Tom Riley positions himself for a sneaky glance down Michelle Ryan's top. For some reason, Sex Lives of the Potato-Men was panned by the critics, but I loved it and so did most people I know who've seen it. It worked because it had the gonads to be audaciously lewd, in a way that the Carry Ons were at the time - at least they were to me, but I was young and impressionable then. I Want Candy isn't - you wouldn't want your five year old to see it, but there's nothing particularly naughty going on - the innuendo is very reserved and the obligatory yuk moment is a half-arsed bolt of jism in the face, which struck me as particularly uninventive. Couple that with the fact that the only nudity is a bloke's arse and you really start to wonder where they were aiming. It's not nearly funny enough to stand up on its own as a comedy, the story's tired and predictable and the naughtiness is far too restrained. However, despite all that, I did warm to it and, despite not being able to explain quite why, I rather liked it for its English warmth and cast of recognisable characters - among them Jimmy Carr, Mackenzie Crook (Gareth from The Office) and Eddie Marsan (Sixty-Six, The Illusionist), who is rapidly becoming one of my favourite actors of the moment - and for better or worse, I still can't get Mel C's title song out of my head.

I Want Candy isn't the ballsy sex comedy we'd all hoped for, but its rather tame nature might endear it to Middle England. If you go to car boot sales or have ever had tea with your vicar, but still consider yourself naughty on the right day, this one might be for you.

I enjoyed this film: 3/5

I think the average moviegoer will enjoy it: 3/5

Testosterone Satisfaction Rating: 1/5 - no action despite the promise.

To enjoy this film you should be: embarrassed by the thought of going to a strip club.

I Want Candy was released in the UK on 23rd March 2007.
