Hard to believe it's only four years since the first Hellboy movie. Back then we didn't know who Guillermo del Toro was -
in fact I was very surprised to find out just now that he had anything to do with the first Hellboy, but he wrote and
directed that one too. Since then he's found critical acclaim with Pan's Labyrinth and
is due to helm The Hobbit in a few years' time. We'll forgive him Blade 2, shall we?
For such a relatively un-watched first episode, Hellboy 2 has been rather keenly anticipated. Certainly it's a
visual treat, with monsters and ghoulies straight from the pages of the slightly deranged doodlers. Ron Perlman came to my
attention in Police Academy 7, where he was completely awful (he fit in well then), but fortunately he's very good at the
cigar chomping and wisecracks. Bad news is that David Hyde Pierce (Niles in Frasier) isn't doing the voice of the fishy
man any more (possibly miffed at not being credited last time out - who knows), but everything else is solidly in place.
If you didn't see the first one, it won't really matter, you'll pick it up quickly enough and you don't need to follow the
plot to enjoy it anyway.
Hellboy 2: The Golden Army is an enjoyable fantasy romp, all special effects and no thinking. Its character assures its
success and its style endears it to the critics. Nice one.
