The Heartbreak Kid

The Heartbreak Kid

Cast: Ben Stiller, Michelle Monaghan, Malin Akerman, Jerry Stiller.

Directed by Bobby and Peter Farrelly.

Story: A guy meets the love of his life on his honeymoon.

Running Time: 1hr 55 minutes.

UK Certificate 15.

How do you make a romantic comedy that blokes want to see as well as women? You get the Farrelly brothers to make it.

Ben Stiller teaches Malin Akerman how to hitch-hike. Do you know the Farrelly brothers? Their career has been hit-and-miss - hits like Dumb & Dumber and There's Something About Mary have been the highlights, Stuck on You and The Perfect Match the lowlights, with Kingpin and Shallow Hal somewhere in between. With their history, it's a surprise that they haven't experimented with putting their brash humour into a romantic comedy before as it's a fairly obvious idea. The trouble is, they were beaten to it by Judd Apatow, and Knocked Up is much better as a comedy. As a date movie, however, I'd have to point you at this one, because the rom part of the rom-com is given a lot more significance.

Michelle Monaghan is amused by Ben Stiller's three-handed cocktail trick. Ben Stiller has carved a career from neurotic accident prone characters and he's good value here. His impetuous marriage to Malin Akerman goes badly wrong when she reveals herself to have more screws loose than an MFI wardrobe. Whilst on their honeymoon, Stiller meets and falls for Michelle Monaghan, who we last saw in M:I:3 and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, who doesn't know he's on his honeymoon ... all fairly predictable stuff. The movie is rather clumsily segregated into comedy and romance, with the two never allowed to meld, which gives the film an unfinished sensation - however there are some full-on comedy moments that are enough to paper over that detail. It's crass, but not overly so - it'll still make you laugh unless you're expecting a Hugh Grant style rom-com.

The Heartbreak Kid is very mainstream, despite its Farrelly comedy, and it does the job. You won't resent paying to see it and you'll laugh in the right places - it's just that Knocked Up does the same thing so much better.

I enjoyed this film: 3/5

I think the average moviegoer will enjoy it: 4/5

Testosterone Satisfaction Rating: 2/5 - Malin Akerman gets her boobs out more than once, several f*cks and one c*nt in comedy context.

To enjoy this film you should be: on a date.

The Heartbreak Kid was released in the UK on 5th October 2007.
