A new Shyamalan movie always has me salivating - but this one is a bit of a disappointment.
Things get freaky right from the off in this one. Everyone in the vicinity of Central Park goes all stare-y and tops
themselves, all at the same time. Yep, I'd definitely call that a "Happening". As people try and leg it from the city,
we follow Mark Wahlberg and Zooey Deschanel (Trillian in Hitchhiker's Guide) and,
as usual, we stay in the dark as much as they do. There are, it has to be said, some brilliant sequences, but the overall
feel lacks the suspense we expect from Shyamalan's previous works, such as The Sixth Sense, Signs,
The Village and the seminal Unbreakable. Since he's started writing his own scripts (starting
with Lady in the Water), he hasn't been able to match those previous successes, which
is a crying shame - and he even resorts to the crash-bang ha-ha-made-you-jump tactic that makes me want to poke him in the
eye with a mouldy sausage. Hopefully he'll go back to his old ways next time.
The Happening isn't terrible, but it's not up to the standard we expect from M Night Shyamalan. It's worth a rental
for the creepy bits, but it's easily his worst movie so far. Disappointing.
I enjoyed this film: 3/5
I think the average moviegoer will enjoy it: 3/5
Testosterone Satisfaction Rating: 1/5
To enjoy this film you should be: not expecting another Sixth Sense.
The Happening was released in the UK on 13th June 2008.
