Fantasy F1:
Bit of a problem with these new sprint races. Qualifying is now on the Friday. I don't really want to mess with the rules mid-season so we'll carry on having teams locked on Friday night, which means you can already see the qualifying results. But the scores are based on the GRID, not the qualifying, so effectively it's the result of Saturday's sprint race. We'll run with that for now and see how it goes. So cutoff for edits for Silverstone is still midnight GMT on the night of Friday 16th July.

The Guardian

The Guardian

Cast: Kevin Costner, Ashton Kutcher, Melissa Sagemiller, Sela Ward, Clancy Brown, John Heard.

Directed by Andrew Davis.

Story: Top Gun, but lower and wetter.

Running Time: 2hrs 19 minutes.

UK Certificate 12A.

The Guardian is Top Gun set in the coastguard. Trouble is, we must be too close to a sewage outlet, because bobbing over every wave is a suspicious floater sullying the experience.

Kevin Costner considers that sinking might be better than looking this bad. To tell the truth, I quite warmed to The Guardian. There were enough amusing moments in the script to compensate for the intense cheesiness. This lasted all through the training, through to the graduation of the class (what was left of it) and all the way to the end of the movie - except hang on, it's not the end of the movie, there are another two stories tacked onto the end before the end credits mercifully roll. It was as the first extra bit started that I realised I didn't want to sit through another half an hour of it - and that's a pretty damning indictment of what was - easily - the best part of the movie. The two further instalments are so achingly predictable that literally two seconds after they start, you know exactly what's going to happen and largely how it's going to unfold. If the last half hour had been binned, I'd be tossing up between a rating of 3 or 4 - but after that final double torture, 2 seems generous. It really is that painful.

Ashton Kutcher only takes one bottle into the shower, but it's a big-ass one. Kevin Costner has always seemed too famous to me. Sure, he's not bad, but he's certainly not a master of his field. He has enough screen presence to carry off his role as a lifesaver turned instructor burdened with guilt and a failed marriage, but many of his contemporaries could have done better. Ashton Kutcher, who was surprisingly good in A Lot Like Love, can't repeat the feat here, but he handles the comedy moments very well indeed - I think he'd do well in movies such as American Pie and Accepted - but then, that wouldn't please Demi, would it? Andrew Davis, the director, previously made The Fugitive, so he's obviously capable of delivering with the right story and performers, but neither are up to the task here. Thank heavens for the sparky script, or the film would be almost completely without merit - well, apart from the seaborne scenes. They look very nice, even if there is a suspicious amount of light in the middle of the ocean in the dead of night.

The Guardian is trite and derivative, but still fairly entertaining up until the point where it should have ended. After that, it implodes catastrophically, destroying all the hard work and leaving nothing more than an aching arse to show for it. The final two reels should have been left to drown.

I enjoyed this film: 2/5

I think the average moviegoer will enjoy it: 3/5

Testosterone Satisfaction Rating: 1/5 - some macho bullshit.

To enjoy this film you should: leave at the first fake ending (at about 1h30).

The Guardian was released in the UK on 12th October.

As an ex Chef I like cooking and throwing things into the pot, Andrew Davis obviously likes to do the same with films, so take a little bit of Top Gun sprinkle generously with An Officer and a Gentlemen, correct the seasoning and simmer with lot's of salt water for a very long time and you have The Guardian.

What I really want to write is that this film is a waste of money and complete sh?te. However that would not do justice to some wonderful underwater filming beautiful Kodiak scenery and some impressive USCG helicopter shots, that's the good bit's over with.

This film never reaches the mark. The training water scenes are well executed, there are some really fantastic bit's of camera work but these small good points are washed away with so much stupidity (e.g The Bearing sea is not where you would find kayak enthusiasts unless they were lobotomised, and whilst I'm sure USCG swimmers are very good, swimming against 30foot swells is a non starter unless your superman)

The movie never seems to get to where it's going and your left thinking it should have ended by now, but no another bit of 'story' is stapled to the script. Maybe if Gossett Jr, Gere and Winger had been consulted by Davis things could have been spiced up, however they were not. This is a film that should have gone straight to DVD, actually save yourself some money, go rent An Officer and a Gentlemen it's better.
