Factotum

Cast: Matt Dillon, Lili Taylor, Marisa Tomei, Fisher Stevens. Written and directed by Bent Hamer, from the book by Charles Bukowski. Story: A drunken budding writer goes from job to job between drinks. Running Time: 1hr 34 minutes. UK Certificate 15.

Factotum is a peculiar film. Dark with a hint of acidity, it's interesting to watch if only for its novelty value.

A factotum, we are told, is a man who performs many jobs. Matt Dillon certainly does that - he loses his first job before the opening credits and has dispensed with about a dozen by the final reel, thanks to his inability to give a monkey's about the task in hand. As soon as he's earned enough money to get drunk, he drifts away into his own manky world of booze and fags. He writes stories and dreams of the day that he sells one to a magazine - but the plot isn't terribly important, it's the little things that happen that make the movie - such as Dillon spending several minutes trying to figure out the right time from a clock that runs 35 minutes fast every hour. They're not laugh-out-loud funny, but they're amusing and prolific enough to sustain the movie and divert the viewer from the depression that might have otherwise arisen from watching such a dark and cynical character.

Matt Dillon gives a sensational performance in a role reminiscent of Sean Penn's in The Assassination of Richard Nixon, mixing calmness with callousness while still betraying a certain sensitivity. His detachment gives the movie its feel - a steady, ponderous tale with many lightly amusing moments. Great if you like that kind of thing - like Sideways or Broken Flowers, for example, but torture for someone after an action fix, or even looking for a message. Factotum is just the story of a not particularly likeable guy making a dog's dinner of his life. But it's quite fun, too - which is surprising considering how depressing it would be to have a life like that.

Factotum is a slow-burning story that never ignites, but it's entertaining enough because of its quirky details and intense focus on small issues. Worth a watch if you can find it playing anywhere.
