The Assassination of Richard Nixon

The Assassination of Richard Nixon Cast: Sean Penn, Naomi Watts, Don Cheadle, Jack Thompson.

Story: True story of an extreme assassination attempt by an everyday guy.

Running Time: 1hr 35 minutes.

Certificate 15.

Some movies come and go without you even noticing them being there, which is exactly the problem faced by the lead character in the Assassination of Richard Nixon. It's a shame that the movie has shared the same fate, as it's far fresher and compelling than many a headliner.

Sean Penn discovers who farted. The Assassination of Richard Nixon, a true story set in 1974, follows ordinary guy Sam Bicke as he becomes increasingly tired of being the downtrodden underdog and decides to make a name for himself by popping the president. It's tricky to make a story like this stick and so it's to the makers' huge credit that the viewer is sympathetic to Sam throughout the whole episode. This is achieved by making a detailed character study of Sam through the various parts of his inadequate life, failed marriage and depressing job as a furniture salesman. As Sam becomes more disillusioned with life and the system, we flash-forward to him recording his thoughts on a tape to Leonard Bernstein as he plans the assassination.

Naomi Watts denies flatulence, blaming it on the barman. Sean Penn is the shy but decent underachiever Bicke, and it's his performance that is the centrepiece, determining whether the movie lives or dies. Fortunately, Sean Penn acts out of his skin, delivering an Oscar-worthy performance and making us sympathise with his plight, while staying short of actually encouraging us to bump off world leaders. Naomi Watts, as Sam's ex-wife, provides finely judged fuel to Sam's frustration and Jack Thompson delivers a full-bloodedly obnoxious furniture selling boss. All these fine performances conspire to create a real sense of emptiness in Sam's prospectless life. As the end credits roll, we're left with a continuing sadness and fatalistic feeling that maybe some people just aren't ever going to succeed in a dog-eat-dog world. It's most definitely not an uplifting film, it's a very real and personal story so it's not a first-date movie, nor is it for the popcorn brigade.

The Assassination of Richard Nixon is such a high quality movie that I recommend it most heartily to those who like serious movies such as Monster. It's extremely well acted, well written and professionally directed. Top notch.

I enjoyed this film: 5/5

I think the average moviegoer will enjoy it: 3/5

Testosterone Satisfaction Rating: 1/5 Some bad language and an attempted assassination scene involving shooting.

To enjoy this film you should: enjoy serious films.
