Monster

Story: True story about a prostitute-turned-serial-killer.

It's always tricky to be objective about an Oscar-winning film. Half of me wants to knee-jerk and criticise it just to be awkward, the other half wants to appreciate what all the fuss is about. Fortunately, Charlize Theron's performance is unequivocally seminal and so I have no ambivalence in recommending it wholeheartedly.

Monster is all about the story and acting and they're both fabulous. Christina Ricci backs up Charlize Theron nicely but it's clearly Charlize who takes the glory. Her portrayal of Aileen Wuornos is one of the best performances I can remember seeing, and is made all the more poignant by comparison with her previous roles, much like Jack Nicholson's in About Schmidt. The story is painful and thought-provoking, leading the viewer through disgust, sympathy and contemplation. We simultaneously dislike and root for Aileen, we disapprove and yet we understand - it's a wonderful demonstration of how irrationally we form our opinions of others and asks us to see the whole person before passing judgement based on an isolated event.

Personally I can't find anything bad to say - it's just the kind of movie I like to see at the cinema. When I'm sat in the darkness, away from the hullabaloo of everyday life, I like to become immersed in a good story and to think about the subjects raised. I'm weird like that though. Most people will be bored stupid and will wistfully drift off in their mind to the empty nonsense of The Day After Tomorrow that they saw last week.

There's little else to say - this isn't a pretty film, nor does it throw up much in the way of surprises. It's a simple story, honestly and compellingly told, and it made me think. I approve!

Testosterone Satisfaction Rating: 2/5 Charlize Theron appears topless but looks a bit minging. The film is too heavy for much testosterone.
