Epic Movie

Epic Movie

Cast: Adam Campbell, Jayma Mays, Faune A Chambers, Jennifer Coolidge, Tony Cox, Kal Penn, Crispin Glover, Carmen Electra.

Directed by Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer.

Story: Movie spoofs.

Running Time: 1hr 24 minutes.

UK Certificate 12A.

Epic Movie is the latest in the seemingly endless -Movie series, and it's the weakest yet.

Kal Penn (Kumar from Harold and Kumar Get the Munchies), splicing the mainbrace. I like daft humour. The previous Date Movie and Scary Movie were a laugh a minute, but they seem to have run out of steam somewhat. Every significant movie is parodied, from Snakes on a Plane, through The Da Vinci Code, Pirates of the Caribbean and X-Men before settling in Narnia for the main story push. If you don't see a LOT of movies, you'll miss many of the references, and some are spoofs of US TV shows that most of us Brits won't have heard of.

Leaving the target geography aside, there's the target demographic. Whereas previous episodes of the series allowed the lowbrow humour to filter through to all of us with an unsophisticated funny bone, Epic Movie is aimed squarely at the late teen. It's perfectly possible to broaden that appeal, as demonstrated by the American Pie franchise, but not when The orphans meet Harry Beaver ... ho ho you're using the production-line values exhibited here. The cast are largely low-rent and low-comedy. The few stars, such as Tony Cox, the foul-mouthed dwarf from Bad Santa, are not given enough freedom to shine, though Jayma Mays is an amusing replacement for Anna Faris, who seems to have wisely jumped ship.

Fortunately this is probably the shortest "Epic" movie in history at a paltry 84 minutes, but it doesn't feel too short at all. Although the joke rate is high, very few of them hit, with the chuckles limited to basic slapstick and references to the actors' previous roles - much like Dirk Benedict's reaction to the Cylon costume in the opening sequence to The A-Team - but far more deliberate and clumsy than that.

Epic Movie suffers from the cash-in mentality that infuses it. With more money and effort spent, it could have been a worthy sequel, but it's just not funny enough. Worth seeing only if you're very easily amused.

I enjoyed this film: 2/5

I think the average moviegoer will enjoy it: 1/5

Testosterone Satisfaction Rating: 1/5 - very cheap humour indeed. They say f**k once, which makes you wonder why the guy pretending to be Samuel L Jackson had to rail against his "goddam snakes on this goddam plane".

To enjoy this film you should: laugh at pot plants.

Epic Movie was released in the UK on 9th February.
