Snakes on a Plane

Snakes on a Plane

Cast: Samuel L Jackson, Julianna Margulies, Mark Houghton, Sunny Mabrey, Nathan Phillips, Rachel Blanchard.

Directed by David R Ellis.

Story: Snakes. On a plane.

Running Time: 1hr 45 minutes.

UK Certificate 15.

Snakes on a Plane is probably the best title of the year - but is it the best movie? Not by a long chalk, but it's considerably more fun than a transatlantic crossing sitting between a whiffer and a puker.

This one says, 'made in Taiwan'. Apparently Samuel L Jackson insisted that this original title was retained - and what a good decision that was. The title inspired the internet community, who collectively designed and wrote the script in a mass community geekathon, the like of which has never been seen before. The movie unashamedly steals all the established horror cliches and gleefully pastes them to the screen, happy to revel in the fun without taking itself at all seriously. Jackson himself is as assured and watchable as ever as the FBI officer entrusted with the safe passage of witness Nathan Phillips to his LA court date, whilst the snakes themselves are almost exclusively computer-generated, allowing a great deal more flexibility in the placing of the slithery stars.

Julianna Margulies investigates the rumour of a twelve inch trouser snake on board. Given the fact that the snakes aren't actually there, they do a great job of interacting with the scenery and other stars. Biting and munching their way through the cast in various icky and comical ways (including a wince-inducing toilet moment), it's only their rabid activity that gives them away as special effects. Julianna Margulies (from ER) plays it straight as the experienced stewardess - but then so does everyone. It's only the silly plot elements and occasional throwaway line that really put the tongue in the cheek, but it's enough to raise it above the usual straight-faced action vehicle. The daftness can get a little tiring - it could have lost fifteen minutes from the running time - and the editing is shaky in places, particularly *that* soundbite: "I've had it with these mother fucking snakes on this mother fucking plane!" That line seems to have been shoehorned in like Homer Simpson into a size 8.

Snakes on a Plane is good fun if you can take it in the intended spirit. It's not the classic that the blogsphere might take it as, but it's pleasingly amusing if you can stand the idea of hundreds of rampaging invertebrates. Worth a look.

I enjoyed this film: 3/5

I think the average moviegoer will enjoy it: 4/5

Testosterone Satisfaction Rating: 3/5 - a classic gratuitous horror style mile-high scene shows off Rebecca McLeod's globular surgical purchases, many people die in nasty ophidian ways.

To enjoy this film you should be: not afraid of snakes.

Snakes on a Plane was released in the UK on 18th August.

Without spoiling the film (which I enjoyed) I thought that the way the first few characters died was cleverly engineered to provide the necessary horror to both sexes! I've been wary of aircraft toilets ever since...

i really like you in the film snakes on a plain and i would really like to meet you.
i think it was unfair they made it your last day because if they had made a second film you wouldn't be in it.
also i would like to know how it felt being in a plain where near the end half the side of the plain got ripped off.
i think you are so cool and you are the best. bye for now.
