Children of Men is quite stunning. Watch and learn, Hollywood, this is how to engage an audience.

Clive Owen never regained his confidence after losing the James Bond gig to Daniel Craig. Set in 2027, a time when women have been mysteriously infertile for the past 18 years, Clive Owen becomes embroiled with a group who can potentially save the species from extinction. To be honest, if you sit down and think about the plot, there are several holes and loose ends left unexplained, but none of that matters because of the amazing quality with which it's brought to life on screen. The cinematography is defined by a series of long continuous action sequences, which are literally breathtaking in their realisation. One early scene features a motorbike chasing a car - the action is viewed from inside the car, with the camera rotating to show all four occupants as appropriate (with seemingly no room left for a camera!), all the while with the motorbike chasing, shooting, crashing, all happening in one seamless shot. Even this, though, is blown into the weeds by an epic sequence later in the movie, set in a warzone, with tanks, rockets, buildings exploding everywhere - again, this is all one shot, following Owen into and out of the besieged building, all the while surrounded by realistic pyrotechnics and a cast of fifty plus. I've never seen anything like it - quite astonishing.

Michael Caine dresses up like a 2027 Michael Bolton. Director Alfonso Cuaron is probably best known for directing Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, but he's also responsible for the Spanish movie Y Tu Mama Tambien, a very highly regarded and most enjoyable piece of foreign cinema. With Children of Men, he proves he's a world class talent and one of the few directors who can use a budget wisely. There are special effects employed, but they're beautifully subtle - so much so that on the face of it you'd never spot them as effects. We're "treated" to a shot of a baby being born - and again, I've never seen it done so authentically, visually at least. The result is so good that I genuinely don't know whether this scene employed CGI or physical models. It's tough, then, to see it languishing in the charts in the same region as dross like Accepted, when it's easily one of the best films of the year, and definitely the most real feeling.

Children of Men is a revelation. Whilst lacking a little in cohesiveness, it more than makes up for it with some quite unbelievably real sequences. If you at all appreciate the craft of making movies, go and see Children of Men.

I enjoyed this film: 5/5

I think the average moviegoer will enjoy it: 5/5

Testosterone Satisfaction Rating: 4/5 - very real gunplay and battlefield action, non-erotic boobs from Claire-Hope Ashitey.

To enjoy this film you should: appreciate movies.

Children of Men was released in the UK on 22nd September.

The director of Children Of Men (the same guy who did the 2nd Harry Potter movie) Alfonso Cuaron has managed to take PD James' book and give the audience a surprisingly realistic view of what life might be like in 2027, the film is not only a window into the possible future but a fantastic thriller as well that keeps you on the edge of your seat throughout the film.

The main plot centres on Theo (Owen), a junior bureaucrat in the energy ministry who's fed up with his life and takes little persuasion to join his ex (Moore) in a bit of cloak and dagger. In our London of the (not to distant) future and indeed the world no child has been born in nearly 20 years, for some reason no one can establish why either. However, this population twist has allowed governments to pretty much do what they like which in turn has sparked a half decent underground network of activists determined to get things back to how they used to be.

Theo get's involved with Julian to escort a young black woman, Kee (Ashitey), out of Britain as she's the first woman to get pregnant in nearly two decades. As the government has made immigration it's prime 'hate point' this is going to be a bit tricky as Theo, Julian, Kee and various minders have to get from London to the coast within a couple of days to get Kee to safety. Although a gritty film there is also some light entertainment along the way provided by a very hippy Jasper (Caine) an ex political cartoonist and long term friend of Theo

Although the cinematography is excellent it does not steal you away from the substance of the film, which touches on and grapples with all kinds of wonderful themes, from simple human interaction to trust, betrayal, violence, political interference, concentration camps and even a good dose of environmental issues. There's so much to enjoy in this film and so many questions it asks. It's a cornucopia for both the mind and the eye. It's packed with plot and sub-plot and I think it will have some people in tears (some for joy and some for sorrow) This is about as good as films get you won't be disappointed, go see it.
