Chicken Little

Chicken Little

Cast: Zach Braff, Joan Cusack, Steve Zahn, Patrick Stewart, Garry Marshall, Adam West.

Story: A chick struggles to convince the town of an alien invasion after a prior false alarm.

Running Time: 1hr 21 minutes.

UK Certificate U.

Chicken Little is Disney's first in-house CGI movie - and it shows. Not that it's not good fun, it just has more in common with an acorn falling from the sky than a full-scale alien invasion.

Even with his professor glasses on, Chicken Little always looked like a cock. Let's cut straight to the chase - Chicken Little is for kids. There are a few attempts to keep the adults amused, but they're too few and far between to warrant a trip to the movies without the family. Zach Braff (Scrubs, Garden State) takes the lead role as hapless little cock Chicken Little, a rather underdeveloped character who could do with being twice as cute and five times as funny. His buddies Ugly Duckling, Fish Out of Water and Runt (a very large pig, ho ho) team up to support the feathery little clucker when a piece of an alien spaceship lands on his noggin. Unfortunately, none of the characters are very funny - lightly amusing at best - so there's not much for the voicers to work with. Once inside the alien ship, we're introduced to a three-eyed fluffy carrot thing, which comprehensively steals the show by being cute and physically amusing - attributes sadly missing from the flat-eyed main cast.

'Runt' gets a yearning for KFC at just the wrong moment. The trouble is, we've been spoiled by the likes of Shrek and the exceptional Madagascar, so when an animation comes around that's only "good", we see it as bad - Chicken Little is not bad, it has a lot going for it, and it's still way better than a lot of the live action stuff for kids (e.g. Thunderbirds). I think Disney (and first-time CGI director Mark Dindal) just need a little more experience with the medium before they can compete on level terms - many of the characteristics shown here are reminiscent of 2D cartoons such as Ren & Stimpy or even Spongebob Squarepants. The 3D genre can offer so much more as has been shown many times in the past. Lesson learned, with a bit of luck.

Chicken Little is a pleasant movie and will definitely appeal to kids, the younger the better. It can't compete with the Finding Nemos or the Ice Ages of this world, but it holds its own against the also-rans like Valiant. Worth watching if you've already seen all the incredible ones.

I enjoyed this film: 4/5

I think the average moviegoer will enjoy it: 4/5

Testosterone Satisfaction Rating: 0/5.

To enjoy this film you should be: pre-teen.

Chicken Little is released in the UK on 10th February.
