The Brothers Grimm

The Brothers Grimm

Cast: Matt Damon, Heath Ledger, Lena Headey, Jonathan Pryce, Peter Stormare, Monica Bellucci.

Directed by Terry Gilliam.

Story: Swindling spook-slayers take on a real fairy tale.

Running Time: 1hr 58 minutes.

UK Certificate 12A.

The Brothers Grimm is a surprisingly entertaining load of hogwash with just a hint of Monty Python about it. Which is no surprise really, as it's directed by Terry "big-splatty-foot Python artist" Gilliam.

Monica Bellucci, far from grimm. It's not entirely obvious at first, but after a few subtlely silly moments, it becomes clear that The Brothers Grimm is a tongue-in-cheek affair. Terry Gilliam has never been one for mainstream movies and even this, his least surreal movie to date, is a little off-the-wall in places. I never expected to warm to the fairy-tale comedy/drama fusion, but I'm pleased to report that it's refreshing and entertaining, with enough immature humour to keep us in a chuckly mood. It's borderline though, at some points it's leaning on "like a child would write" childish rather than "humour that you laugh at while feeling like a kid" childish. Fortunately, it's just barely on the right side and made me laugh while still building enough suspense into the story. Within this fantasy framework, Gilliam takes a rare but well-advised foray into CGI territory, with mixed results - some are invasive and others are seamless - all are acceptable. A minor warning though - one or two kiddies are seen off in a rather dark manner, which could keep your youngest awake at night if they're prone to that kind of thing, and there's a heavy build-up of seriousness at the end.

Heath Ledger - there's only one way to get rid of a mole. Heath Ledger has really come of age lately, from humble beginnings in A Knight's Tale, becoming the highlight of the very ordinary Lords of Dogtown and now to give easily the finest performance here. Matt Damon, as the other Grimm, is adequate but no more, but the viewer is distracted from the performances by the variety of spectacularly bad accents marched out by people who really should know better. Jonathan Pryce's French fails to make even pantomime standard - though his acting is good. Lena Headey's voice wanders up the Pennines and back again more than once and Peter Stormare - so great in Fargo and Constantine - can't decide whether to be French or Italian. There's so much vocal ineptitude that it makes me think it's deliberate - maybe trying to be funny - especially as the acting is otherwise so good by the main culprits.

The Brothers Grimm came out of nowhere and is better than it should be, viewed objectively. It never looks real, the story's daft and it's not hilarious, but the character of the movie and the excellent performance by Heath Ledger make it a thoroughly enjoyable way to spend an evening. Take the family!

I enjoyed this film: 4/5

I think the average moviegoer will enjoy it: 4/5

Testosterone Satisfaction Rating: 1/5 - Monica Bellucci is worth one point even if she only appears at the end - but everything's family-friendly. Some of the fantasy "peril" scenes may not be suitable for under 10s.

To enjoy this film you should be: in a light-hearted mood.

The Brothers Grimm is released in the UK on 4th November.
