Blades of Glory

Blades of Glory

Cast: Will Ferrell, Jon Heder, Jenna Fischer, Will Arnett, Amy Poehler, William Fichtner, Craig T Nelson, Romany Malco.

Directed by Josh Gordon and Will Speck.

Story: Figure skating can be fun.

Running Time: 1hr 33 minutes.

UK Certificate 12A.

Jon Bon Jovi went down with his Blades of Glory - or something like that. Fortunately, Will Ferrell does rather better.

Smell my cheese. Blades of Glory is classic Ferrell, like Talladega Nights - sacrificing plausibility for comedy to excellent effect. Ferrell is his usual irreverent and hilarious self, ably supported by Napoleon Dynamite Jon Heder. The rivals are persuaded to enter a pairs figure skating championship together - cue plenty of non-PC homophobia jokes and bundles of unbelievable plot details, all of them enjoyable.

The remainder of the cast are largely recognisable comedy TV performers, with Arrested Development's Will Arnett and The Office (US) secretary Jenna Fischer fitting in particularly well. Mostly-serious actor William Fichtner is less comfortable and wholly forgettable, whilst Amy Poehler bears a spooky resemblance to a young Beverly D'Angelo. Romany Malco, one of the more memorable characters from The 40 Year Old Virgin, is particularly watchable in a disappointingly short role, but it should be enough to give him some other jobs, which can only be a good thing. The actors all, however, take a back seat to the very pleasing daft comedy games going on centre stage, as Will Ferrell gets on with what he does best.

Blades of Glory is easy to recommend. If you enjoyed Talladega Nights and "got" Elf, you'll be doing pirouettes for Blades of Glory.

I enjoyed this film: 4/5

I think the average moviegoer will enjoy it: 3/5

Testosterone Satisfaction Rating: 1/5 - Jenna Fischer is rather saucy in the girl-next-door way that she shoes so well.

To enjoy this film you should be: a Ferrell fan.

Blades of Glory was released in the UK on 6th April 2007.
