Things are getting strange I'm starting to worry. This could be a case for Mulder and Scully.
No, I haven't gone all lyrical, that's a line from a Catatonia song, and I haven't been able to stop humming it since
seeing the new X Files movie, which is getting quite annoying because I can't remember any other lines. And it's also
the most interesting thing I can think to say about the new movie.
I think it's fair to say that no-one was particularly excited at the prospect of another X Files movie. It's run its
course, it's consigned to history and nobody's arsed about it any more. They did the big alien thing in the last one,
clearly they can't do that again, so this time it's up to Billy Connolly to persuade the undynamic duo that he's actually
getting visions and isn't just a pervy old priest. Or maybe he's both. Or neither. Cue Twilight Zone music ... I mean
X Files jingle. It wants soooo much to be today's Twilight Zone.
It's ten years since the first movie and Mouldy still wants to believe what Scally can't get her ginger noggin around.
We've seen it all before and this effort is so low key that it would seem unambitious even as a double-header of the
TV series. Billy Connolly's wonderful as usual, but I was rather disinterested with the rest of the cast - Amanda Peet
in particular, whose role is more one-dimensional than Mr Benn's hairdresser. When they take the covers off the plot at
the end, there's no real dramatic effect, just a feeling of "fair enough" and, "what's next then?" Well, they'd have to
pull off a Batman style comeback to rescue this drifting sailboat.
The X Files: I Want to Believe tries to ditch the glitz and give us a story instead, but when you take that path you've
got to give us a doozy, but this is more of a dozy. It's acceptable, but it won't have you watching the skies.
I enjoyed this film: 3/5
I think the average moviegoer will enjoy it: 2/5
Testosterone Satisfaction Rating: 1/5
To enjoy this film you should be: a die hard X Phile.
The X Files: I Want to Believe was released in the UK on 1st August 2008.
