Bet you haven't seen this one. I'm not sure anyone has. No, wait, I saw it the other day. That's at
least one then.
What on earth happened to Mickey Rourke? I'm sure that if you remember him at all, it'll be from playing with strawberries
with Kim Basinger in 9 1/2 Weeks. Somewhere between then and now he seems to have morphed into a cross between
Jackie Stallone and a pommel horse. I'll give him credit though, he clearly does some of his own gymnastics in the ring,
and he's pretty limber for a sack of spuds - which is a pretty accurate metaphor considering his noticeable resemblance
to Mr Potato Head. I mean, who'd have Botox after seeing him? Who wants to be sucking bananas widthways all day?
Oh yes, the movie. Sorry, I got a bit distracted there by the strange leather man. Rourke is the wrestler of the title,
long past his best but still gamely putting on a show. The movie makes no bones about the wrestling being
choreographed, but also demonstrates the genuine pummelling the participants willingly take. It looks like ol' dicky
Mickey is actually taking it too, but that might be because the budget looks so tiny that you can't believe they can
afford any cleverness. The hand-held camera follows Rourke around documentary-style, so we often see the back of his head.
The style works quite well, but Rourke's performance isn't natural enough to support it. For a documentary style
to work, you have to act so well that you can't tell if it's real or staged - and there's never any question here.
Shame.
The Wrestler is an interesting diversion but it's not a great movie. Worth seeing, but don't do anything silly like
choosing it over Benjamin Button.
I enjoyed this film: 4/5
I think the average moviegoer will enjoy it: 3/5
Testosterone Satisfaction Rating: 3/5 The lovely Marisa Tomei appears topless
several times, the wrestlers kick the snot out of each other and abuse pharmaceuticals.
To enjoy this film: be curious.
The Wrestler was released in the UK on 16th January 2009.
