Wild Hogs

Cast: John Travolta, William H Macy, Tim Allen, Martin Lawrence, Marisa Tomei, Ray Liotta. Directed by Walt Becker. Story: Road Trip with prostate problems. Running Time: 1hr 49 minutes. UK Certificate 12A.

Wow, six big names for a road trip comedy. Well, at least that stops it from being a complete waste of time.

Well that's a bit harsh. There are in fact several chuckley moments, all of them provided by the magical talent of that eternal supporting actor William H Macy. Beside him, Tim Allen, Martin Lawrence and even John Travolta are left reeling as the downtrodden everymen having a mid-life crisis together on the open road. Lawrence still looks and sounds like he's had a stroke (though not quite so much as in the execrable Big Momma's House 2) and John Travolta's so much better at cool than comedy. Henry Fonda pops up at the end, which is interesting, but I don't know, he's just not very good - and the surprise was somewhat stolen by Ghost Rider having the same cameo idea and getting it released a few weeks earlier. I'm told Wild Hogs was insanely popular across the Atlantic, so perhaps it suits the Stateside inner biker, but it doesn't seem to strike the same chord over here. The director Walt Becker's only significant directorial success in the past was Van Wilder, and Wild Hogs could have definitely benefited from a more experienced pilot to give this piggy some pizazz. Hell, even some crackling would do.

There's nothing really wrong with Wild Hogs, it's just not special in any way. Lightly amusing and very amiable, it whiles away nearly two hours in a very pleasant manner. Sometimes that's all you need.

I think the average moviegoer will enjoy it: 3/5

Testosterone Satisfaction Rating: 1/5 - surprisingly little despite the hogs. Women may enjoy the sight of William H Macy's pasty arse. Or not.

To enjoy this film you should be: middle-aged.
