The Visitor is the kind of unassuming movie that will pass you by completely (and probably did when it was
released last July). However, invite it in and make it a cup of cocoa and it'll reward you tenfold.
You won't have heard of Richard Jenkins, unless you noticed his Oscar nomination,
but I guarantee you'll recognise him. He's always been the bit-part man, the
high school kid's anal dad, the bespectacled shopkeeper, and he's never been
particularly memorable in anything. In The Visitor he's a revelation, showing a
mastery of minimalism and a sensitivity maximised by careful direction. He plays
a college professor, drifting through life and keeping the world at arm's length
with a curt, borderline rude manner. When his universe is invaded by a Syrian
drummer and his African girlfriend, things start to change. It's a great character,
and you can believe Jenkins when he says in interviews that he's been waiting all
his career for this role to come up. It's hard to imagine how he could possibly
have played it better.
The Visitor is impeccably and exquisitely made. It does nothing new or clever, it
just does the basics stunningly well. You may be put off by the boring sounding
plot, but give it a chance and it'll hook you.
