Peter O'Toole and Leslie Phillips revel in their profane sparring, sitting outside the world in their own little
deteriorating bubble. Enter stage left Jodie Whittaker, obnoxious but pretty young relative who's going to move in and
look after Leslie. The old smoothie doesn't take at all to the boorish babe, but gravelly O'Toole is smitten and becomes
transfixed by his new muse. What ensues is something akin to a courtship, albeit between two people three generations
apart. If I'd just read that, I'd be creepily hesitant about seeing the movie - but I assure you it's very tactfully
handled, and it's not what you think. It's a strange mix of platonic and sexual, which will disturb some of you -
personally I found it inspirational, but maybe that's because I'll be a dirty old fart myself in a few decades and quite
like the idea of a nubile young thing to lust over.
Leslie Phillips is great fun to watch in an unstereotypically flapping role, but Peter O'Toole is in a different league.
Steely-eyed and dramatically dry - in a good way - he gives the kind of enriching performance that you want to watch over
and over again, and Jodie Whittaker does spectacularly well to hold her own against such an esteemed foil. I could've
watched the whole thing all over again straight away, it's that endearing. The soundtrack is beautifully subtle and,
punctuated by Corinne Bailey Rae's dulcet tones, wonderfully uplifting. The pace is just right, the ending is satisfying
and touching and, most importantly, it reaches inside your heart. It's a bit special.
