Cast: No-one you'll know. Written and directed by Paul Greengrass. Story: The fourth hijacked plane. Running Time: 1hr 31 minutes. UK Certificate 15.

"September 11, 2001. Four planes were hijacked. Three of them reached their target. This is the story of the fourth." You already know from the tagline whether or not this is your kind of movie - all you need to know from me is that they've done a pretty good job with it.

United 93 follows the true story of the hijacked plane in which the passengers revolted against the terrorists. Given the unfortunate ending to the story, it can't be 100% true, but it's certainly very convincing in its telling. Using largely unknown actors (I didn't recognise a single face) and handheld cameras, the movie has a documentary feel to it that creates immediacy and authenticity. Foregoing any action sequence involving the World Trade Center, events unfold to the viewer as they would have done to the authorities struggling to control events on the day. The lack of accurate information and conflicting stories adds to the sense of confusion and impotence felt by the military and civilian air traffic controllers, while the tension within the eponymous flight is palpable as it builds to the inevitable conclusion.

Writer and director Paul Greengrass knows how to make a movie. His Bourne Supremacy was one of the best movies of the year and his skill shows here. As we watch the minutiae of the passengers' lives and the crew's mundane activities, we feel for them because we know what's going to happen. The dialogue isn't as clean as you would expect, which is great as it contributes a huge amount of realism, assisted by the fact that we don't know any of the faces. There are a few expositions in there - the fact that CNN were already broadcasting pictures about the Trade Center attack before the main guys knew about it - but on the whole this isn't a political movie at all, it's a touching true human story, cleverly told.

United 93 isn't a feelgood movie by any stretch of the imagination, but if real-life reconstructions of tragedies are your bag, you won't find much better than this.

Testosterone Satisfaction Rating: 2/5 - you can't help pretending you're about to beat up the hijackers yourself.

To enjoy this film you should be: able to watch a pretty nasty true story.
