Two for the Money

Two for the Money

Cast: Matthew McConaughey, Al Pacino, Rene Russo, Armand Assante, Jeremy Piven.

Directed by DJ Caruso.

Story: An ex-American footballer tells punters who to bet on.

Running Time: 2hrs 2 minutes.

UK Certificate 15.

You'd bet on an Al Pacino movie to be good, wouldn't you? As soon as Two for the Money leaves the blocks you know you're never going to see your money again. Rip up the slip, cut your losses and move on.

Matthew McConaughey's clown feet provide a useful conterbalance during the less hectic moments of the day. The basic premise in this mess is that Matthew McConaughey is an ex-American footballer who has magically predicted the last year's football results with an 80% success rate, thanks to his intimate knowledge of the sport. Casting stupid axiom number 1 aside for now, we're also supposed to believe that he chooses not to bet on his picks himself, because he "lost everything" once before, so he doesn't bet. What kind of monkey spunk is that? I'm not swallowing that (if you'll excuse the rather repulsive metaphor). That kind of limp garbage might work in an episode of Smallville (which is the kind of tepid stuff director DJ Caruso has worked on in the past), but it simply doesn't cut it on the big screen. When sports betting mogul Al Pacino recruits McConaughey for his sports advisory service, it only serves to underline the scam that these real-life "services" are, rather than creating a realistic plot scenario. And, unbelievably, it doesn't get better.

Al Pacino sleeps on his feet these days. Al Pacino, however, is always watchable and he doesn't break the trend here. Were it not for his presence, Two for the Money would have exactly nothing going for it - McConaughey himself, who you may have seen before in Sahara and How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days, is fine, when he remembers to do his southern drawl (which isn't very often), but fails to show much of the puppy-dog charisma that got him the part in the first place. Rene Russo, so effective in The Thomas Crown Affair, is perhaps the biggest disappointment, betraying a singular lack of enthusiasm - hardly surprising really, considering the worthlessness of the juvenile script and the lack of passion in realising it. Even the Mercedes speeding through the crowded streets of New York is made to appear dull. Congratulations Mr Director, you've sapped all the life out of this one.

Two for the Money gives you less than a half for your money. A typically rich performance from Pacino is not enough to save this dull and uninteresting talkie tale of a man who knew his football. Bet on it to rise no higher than the number 5 spot.

I enjoyed this film: 2/5

I think the average moviegoer will enjoy it: 2/5

Testosterone Satisfaction Rating: 0/5 - bleurgh.

To enjoy this film you should: swoon at the sight of Matthew McCona-heehaw.

Two for the Money is released in the UK on 10th March.
