Tristan and Isolde

Tristan and Isolde

Cast: James Franco, Sophia Myles, Rufus Sewell, Mark Strong.

Directed by Kevin Reynolds.

Story: Boy meets girl, with silly "Celtic myth" (apparently) plot attached.

Running Time: 2hrs 5 minutes.

UK Certificate 12A.

Tristan and Isolde is a love story pretending to be Shakespearean. And by Shakespearean I mean turgid, implausible and interminably boring. Mission accomplished.

Sophia Myles and James Franco, resting in the oven for a while. James Franco is one of those actors who you recognise but can't remember where from (I'll help - he's the Green Goblin's son in the new Spider-Man movies). Tristan and Isolde will do nothing to remedy that, as he wears the same blank expression throughout. The Juliet to his Romeo is filled by Sophia Myles, another of those where-have-I-seen-her-before types (she was Lady Penelope in Thunderbirds) who is better than Franco but not as good as her Lady Penelope turn. The two of them meet when Tristan dies and is given the whole burning-boat-into-the-sea treatment. But this is wannabe Shakespeare so yippidy doo, he didn't die after all and the flames designed to destroy a corpse miraculously don't harm him at all. He drifts over from Cornwall to the enemy (Ireland) where Isolde nurses him back to health, they fall in love, he has to leave as she's on the opposing side, silly coincidences, star-crossed lovers, yadda yadda bleurgh. Been there, done that, didn't buy the T-shirt because it was overpriced tat.

Mark Strong seeks out the scriptwriter with a couple of points to make. The leads do manage to generate a small amount of warmth, but it's hard won because we see so little of the falling-for-each-other chapter. It seems that as soon as they meet, he's whisked away, which limits the audience's concern for the separated couple. The story is so daft that you really need to be able to ignore it (which I couldn't) and view it on an emotional level with the characters. At least there is one excellent performance to spruce things up - Mark Strong is superb as a rival lord, showing that his turn in Syriana was no fluke and hopefully paving the way for him to appear in more movies - and better ones than this. I know, I'm being harsh - many people will love Tristan and Isolde for the tragedy of the separated lovers, but they will be joined by at least as many who have seen the same thing done so many times to far greater effect. And the entire medieval cast has perfect white teeth. What's that all about?

Tristan and Isolde will divide the audience. Those who can rise above the absurdity of the plot and simply enjoy the love story will gush over it and won't be able to understand why their neighbour in the theatre has started snoring, while the snorer will be equally as nonplussed at the fan's reaction. You know better than me which camp you fall into - it's over to you.

I enjoyed this film: 2/5

I think the average moviegoer will enjoy it: 3/5

Testosterone Satisfaction Rating: 1/5 - Sophia Myles teases with several oh-so-nearly-skin scenes, some battles, not very gory. Nothing to warp the kids' minds.

To enjoy this film you should be: able to suspend disbelief in order to capture the mood of the love story.

Tristan and Isolde was released in the UK on 21st April.
