Transformers - Robots in Disguise! The summer's most hotly awaited action flick is here, and it certainly
takes no prisoners.
You have to be of a certain age to remember Transformers. Little toy robots that, if you press this bit here,
twiddle that nadget like so, then, no hang on ... turn that back ... oh bollocks to it. Leave it as a toaster.
The idea of bringing them to the big screen was a brave one, but the movie's original trailer last year sparked so much
interest that they knew it was a hit before it was even finished. Michael Bay takes the helm, which already tells you that
it's going to be an all-action effects-fest with a story sufficient only to link the set pieces together.
OK, maybe that's unfair, The Island had a pretty good story and the two Bad Boys movies were
amusing enough, but Pearl Harbor, Armageddon and The Rock were all froth and no Guinness. With Transformers you probably
need to see it a couple of times to even register what the story is, as you'll still be marvelling at the last special
effect when you need to be listening.
Yes, if you're not into effects-laden movies, look away now. These morphing transformy things command the screen and are
ambitiously flamboyant. Top marks to the Industrial Light and Magic crew who made this possible; they are possibly the
best effects in cinematic history. Normally in such an effects-reliant atmosphere there are points during the most
outlandish moments where you start to murmur, "that looks a bit wanky," but it just doesn't happen here. A truck turns
into a robot with 10,000 moving parts (genuinely, I looked that up!) and you BELIEVE. Brilliant.
In a movie like this, the acting often comes off second best, but Shia LeBeouf really gives his all and makes a name for
himself. Love interest and impossibly glamorous Megan Fox has been causing unfamiliar stirrings in young trousers ever
since the trailer surfaced and doesn't really have anything to work with, so it's left to John Turturro to give the only
other memorable performance, as a not-quite-comedy obnoxious FBI git. There's a bundle of in-references for Transformers
fans, including good-bot Optimus Prime's original voice from the TV series, and car nuts will enjoy the first screen
appearance of the Giugaro concept Camaro, albeit in a rather obvious - even for Michael Bay - example of sponsored product
placement. There's even some dark comedy tucked away in there if you look for it, such as the absent-minded flicking away
of a pedestrian by a bot having a bad day.
I was all ready to dismiss Transformers as a bimbo before I saw it. Now I have, I still think it's a bimbo, but I like
it anyway. The plot is thin, the ending predictable and Optimus Prime's stirring pep talk is laughably corny, but the
action really does, in this case, make up for all that. For once, a blockbuster that really does bust blocks.
I enjoyed this film: 4/5
I think the average moviegoer will enjoy it: 4/5
Testosterone Satisfaction Rating: 4/5 - family-friendly action.
To enjoy this film you should be: an action/effects junkie.
Transformers will be released in the UK on 27th July 2007.
