It's The Dukes of Hazzard all over again. I loved The Spirit, but you won't.

Gabriel Macht asks Dan Lauria if he has any boot polish remover. I hope you've seen Sin City, because that'll make my life a whole lot easier. Sin City was adapted from Frank Miller's "graphic novels" (comics to you and me) and it is Miller himself who directs The Spirit - though he's adapted it from Will Eisner's 1940s comics. The visual and verbal style is virtually identical to Sin City, though The Spirit is played much more for laughs. I got the distinct impression in the cinema that I was the only one who appreciated that. I was chuckling away when Samuel L Jackson menacingly told the superhero, "toilets are ALWAYS funny," after he'd just belted him around the head with one, but the audience were eerily silent... I mean, with character names like "Sand Saref", "Plaster of Paris" and "Silken Floss", how can you possibly take it seriously?

Samuel L Jackson cooks up a scheme to plant his face in Scarlett Johansson's cleavage without getting him slapped. Samuel L Jackson certainly knows how far his tongue needs to go into his cheek - this is one of the most entertaining performances he's given. The Spirit himself is Gabriel Macht, who is fine but comprehensively overpowered on screen by Jackson. Scarlett Johansson seems to only be there for her magnificent cleavage, while Eva Mendes ... mmm, you might have to leave me alone with my thoughts for a moment while I remember the shiny clingy wet suit thingy ... mmm ...

The Spirit is not as good as Sin City and most of you will find it a complete waste of time. Think of it as a modern day Adam-West-Batman, though, and it makes complete sense. Call me a freak if you will, but I loved it.

I enjoyed this film: 5/5

I think the average moviegoer will enjoy it: 2/5

Testosterone Satisfaction Rating: 2/5 - Eva gets naked but it's so out of focus you can't really see anything but a quick arse flash. The famous Johansson cleavage is exploited and there's bucketloads of graphic comic violence.

To enjoy this film: Laugh at it.

The Spirit was released in the UK on 1st January 2009.
